"Okay, I'll try my best."
After hanging up, a bone-deep coldness thoroughly enveloped her, leaving her shivering.
She looked down and opened the familiar chat window, but couldn't bring herself to type a single word for the longest time.
She walked over to Randal's room and rummaged through the nightstand. Opening the pill boxes, she snapped a picture and sent it to Dr. Wallace.
[Dr. Wallace, this is all his leftover medication.]
Dr. Wallace replied instantly: [There's at least a ten-day supply in there.]
So aside from the few times she had personally watched him take his pills, he hadn't touched his medication at all.
The realization made Willa gasp sharply.
She thanked the doctor, then immediately texted Randal.
[Are you coming back for lunch? I need to talk to you about something.]
It took a long time for Randal to reply: [Things are crazy at the office today. I'll be home late. What's wrong?]
[Nothing. We'll talk when you get back.]
Willa placed the pill boxes back exactly where she found them.
By the time Randal returned, it was almost ten at night.
He walked in looking utterly exhausted. Seeing her sitting on the sofa, he paused in his tracks. "Why aren't you asleep yet?"
"Waiting for you."
Randal frowned slightly. Sensing something was off, his voice unconsciously tightened. "What is it? Did something happen?"
Willa grabbed his hand and led him to the master bedroom, making him sit on the edge of the bed. She then pulled the pill boxes out from the nightstand and lined them up in front of him, one by one.
Randal's expression shifted, a flicker of panic in his tone. "Wills..."
"I spoke to Dr. Wallace," Willa interrupted, her voice entirely flat. "He said you haven't been in for a follow-up in half a month. These pills should have been finished ages ago."
Randal actually let out a breath of relief, flashing a bitter, self-deprecating smile. "You figured it out. Sooner than I expected."
