The sickly-sweet tone from the other end of the line made Willa's stomach churn with immediate nausea.
She inhaled deeply, trying to maintain her composure, but her fingers involuntarily curled, a dull ache blooming as she gripped the phone tighter.
She couldn't stop the visceral hatred she harbored for the girl on the line—the girl who had stolen the motherly love that rightfully belonged to her, and who now dared to taunt her while playing the victim.
But she had to admit, Stella was young and gorgeous. With her coy, seductive act, hardly any man could resist her deliberate charms.
"Why aren't you saying anything?" Stella crooned softly, practically pouting through the phone. "Are you mad at me?"
"No," Willa replied with utter calm.
"Really?" Stella giggled. "I thought you were going to yell at me. But you really can't blame me. I just went over to say hi, but who knew he'd had so much to drink? I just couldn't push him off..."
"Is that so?" Willa's voice dropped several degrees.
Stella either didn't notice the icy tone or was purposefully trying to disgust her. "You have no idea, Willa. He was so strong. I couldn't move an inch..."
"I have absolutely no interest in hearing about your filthy hookups," Willa cut in, ready to end the call.
"Don't you want to know what he said about you?" Stella rushed to interject.
Willa's finger hovered over the hang-up button for a second before she pulled it back. "What?"
Stella let out a sneering laugh. "He said you just lie there like a dead fish. You have zero moves, so you really can't blame him for stepping out to get a taste of something better."
"Oh, are you done? Is there more? Keep going." Willa's tone remained perfectly flat, as if she were listening to gossip about a complete stranger.
The line went dead silent, clearly caught off guard by Willa's unfazed reaction.
Willa wasn't stupid. She knew Stella was just spouting lies to get a rise out of her.
