"Don't leave yet. The organizers have a banquet planned, and we need to stay for it."
Willa blinked in surprise. "A banquet?"
"Yes." Iris nodded. "In this kind of setting, there's no harm in networking."
Left with no choice, Willa followed Iris down to the banquet hall.
Iris introduced her to a few industry professionals, exchanged some pleasantries, and was quickly pulled away into another conversation.
Willa found herself alone. She stood in a corner with a glass of champagne in hand, feeling entirely out of place.
"Ms. Vance?"
A smiling female voice called out.
Willa turned around to see a woman in her early thirties walking toward her. She was dressed in opulent designer clothes, with two equally glamorous companions trailing behind her.
Willa didn't recognize any of them.
"You are...?"
The woman smiled. "I'm a friend of Scarlett's. My name is Lydia Ramsey. Why are you all by yourself, Ms. Vance?"
Her tone sounded friendly, but there was an unmistakable undercurrent of provocation.
Alarm bells rang in Willa's head, though she kept up appearances. "Hello, Ms. Ramsey."
Lydia's smile widened. "It must be so boring standing here alone. Why don't you come chat with us?"
The two women beside her giggled, their laughter dripping with malicious mockery.
Willa knew they were here to start trouble, but she had no desire to cause a scene at an event like this. "Thank you for the offer, but I need to wait here for my colleague."
"Your colleague?" Lydia arched an eyebrow. "You mean Iris? She's busy. She doesn't have time to look after you."
She took a step forward, dropping the pretense entirely. "Ms. Vance, I heard you're Randal's ex-girlfriend. Are you here to stalk him?"
Willa refused to entertain this petty drama. She turned around to walk away.
