"That's right, Corbin."
Brimming with pride at the mention of her brother, Sophie paused before delivering the final blow. "Who knows what they're doing in the bedroom, but they've been in there for a while."
A faint scoff echoed through the speaker. "Sophie, Corbin left your apartment complex ten minutes ago. You're telling me they're chatting in the bedroom right now? Make up a better lie next time."
Sophie's smile froze, and Willa sat there stunned.
"Give the phone back to Willa."
Sophie rolled her eyes in frustration and handed the phone over. "He pisses me off. You take it."
Willa couldn't help but let out a soft laugh at Sophie's expression. She took the phone, turned off the speaker, and held it to her ear. "Hello?"
"What are you laughing at?"
Willa paused. "I wasn't laughing."
"Is Corbin gone?"
"Yeah." Willa glanced at Sophie. "He left a while ago."
"Right."
Another stretch of silence fell between them.
Willa gripped the phone, unsure of what to say.
Beside her, Sophie mouthed frantically, "Ask him what he wants!"
"So..." Willa started. "Did you call for a reason?"
"No."
Willa blinked in surprise.
Then why did he call?
Before she could process it, Randal spoke again. "Get some rest."
Then the line went dead.
Sophie immediately leaned in. "What did he say?"
Willa looked up, her expression complicated. "He said... get some rest."
Sophie looked just as stunned. "That's it?"
"That's it."
"Don't worry, Willa. Corbin said he'll keep digging for you."
"Okay, thank Corbin for me," Willa replied.
After hanging up, Willa meticulously pieced the information together in her head.
Scarlett was mostly ruled out. Why would she care about Willa's daily movements?
The only logical explanation was that the private investigator had been hired by the same people who framed her father all those years ago.
Perhaps, from the moment she returned to the country, her every move had been under their surveillance.
Willa's fingertips began to tremble, and the phone nearly slipped from her grasp.
A suffocating wave of despair washed over her.
Her phone suddenly buzzed.
She jumped, nearly throwing the device across the room.
[Agent J: Let's meet for lunch. I have something to tell you.]
[Okay.]
