"I'm not used to such expensive tea," Willa said, leaving the cup untouched.
Scarlett didn't seem to mind. She picked up her own cup and took a delicate sip.
"Ms. Vance, I'm not one to beat around the bush. I invited you here today because there's something we need to discuss."
She looked directly at Willa. "You're aware of my engagement to Randal. Our families plan to officially announce it and hold the ceremony next month."
A sudden ache pierced Willa's chest. She forced a smile. "Then congratulations, Ms. Sterling."
"It's too early for congratulations," Scarlett replied. "With you still around, whether or not this wedding actually happens is up in the air."
Willa met her gaze evenly. "If you have something to say, just say it."
Scarlett nodded, pulled a document from her designer bag, and slid it across the table.
Willa glanced down at it. It was an employment contract.
A prominent media conglomerate was offering her a position as an overseas correspondent, stationed in Europe for three years, with an incredibly lucrative compensation package.
The corporate seal was already stamped; it only needed her signature.
Willa frowned. "What is the meaning of this?"
"The meaning is quite clear. I want you to leave Norvale."
Willa almost wanted to laugh.
Did all these people operate from the exact same playbook?
Threats and bribes, every single time.
"And if I refuse to leave?" she asked.
A cold gleam flashed in Scarlett's eyes. "Ms. Vance, I'm genuinely considering your best interests. Staying in Norvale will only put you in more danger."
"As long as you leave, I can guarantee your father will be safe inside. We could even pull some strings to get his sentence reduced."
Willa clenched her fists. "Are you threatening me?"
"Of course not. I'm offering you a trade. And for you, it's all profit."
She set her teacup down, her gaze turning sharp. "Let me give you one final piece of advice. Don't overstep your bounds. Because if you do, even Randal won't be able to protect you."
A chill ran down Willa's spine.
This woman was far more terrifying than Eleanor Yates.
