Upon hearing Benjamin's voice, Giselle forced herself to get up. She wobbled out of the boat.
When she mustered all her energy to glance in Benjamin's direction, she was shocked to find Donovan sitting on a rock looking at her.
She felt her world shifting. For a moment, she thought she was seeing things.
She took a few steps closer. Only then did she see clearly that Donovan was well and alive. He was strong enough to sit up and meet her gaze!
But his face and hair were covered in blood, his chest soaked red as though he had just been through a brutal battle.
Unable to hold back, Giselle rushed forward, her mouth falling open in shock. "Are… are you alright?"
"I'm not dead yet."
He gave her a weary smile, his voice strained. "I haven't loved you enough. I can't possibly die yet."
In that instant, she broke down in tears. Ignoring the blood all over his body, she threw her arms tightly around his neck, sobbing so hard she could barely breathe.
"I thought… I thought you… Thank goodness you're alright, or I really wouldn't know how to go on. Truly, without you, life is meaningless. I—"
He raised a bloodstained hand and gently patted the back of her head to comfort her. "We're both safe now. Let's treat it as a nightmare. It's over… all of it."
Just then, the police and a doctor arrived beside Donovan. In simple Edevanian, they asked about his injuries and told him to get on the boat. He was to be taken to a hospital in the city.
Seeing the blood all over him, she asked softly, "How did you do it?"
"With this," he replied, pulling a bloodstained object from his pocket.
She took it and stared in shock. It was the lid from a can of luncheon meat, complete with its pull ring.
The lid was made of thin metal, which was unremarkable at first glance, but the edges were razor-sharp—enough to cut the skin if handled carelessly.
As it turned out, after she had left the island on the boat, Donovan had been savagely beaten by the vicious Teddy.
The blows had left him dizzy and spitting blood. He had nearly lost his life.
