Giselle said coldly, "First of all, I want to know the whole truth about how you caused my grandparents' deaths back then. Secondly, I want you to get down on your knees in front of their graves for three days and three nights. Lastly, you're going to transfer all the assets in your company that belonged to them into my name."
With that, she glanced at Renee and added, "These should be easy for you. Once you've done all three, I'll tell you where Anne is."
Renee pressed her lips together for several seconds before answering with a blank expression. "Your grandparents died in a car accident. It had nothing to do with me."
"Alright, you can stop right there," Giselle cut her off before rising from her seat and leaving. "We are done here. You might as well give up now. You're never going to find your daughter!"
Before she left, she added one last jab. "Since you've lost both your children, why don't you and Tony try having another one? If you can't, there's always IVF and surrogates. I'm sure there's nothing in this world you can't pull off anyway!"
Noticing that Giselle was genuinely about to leave, Renee grabbed her hand. "Wait! We're not done talking, Giselle."
After searching for more than a year, Renee had run out of options. She no longer cared whether Giselle was telling the truth or not. As long as there was the tiniest chance Anne was alive, she would cling to it.
This time, she seemed to have made up her mind. "Alright. If you really want to know the truth from 20 years ago, I'll tell you. Your grandparents' deaths… did have something to do with me."
Giselle immediately lifted her head when she heard that. Her hawk-like gaze bore into Renee. "Tell me everything. I want all the details!"
Renee sank back into the couch, and after taking a moment to gather herself, she started recounting the tragedy from decades ago in a weary tone.
"I'll admit it. More than 20 years ago, I harbored a lot of resentment toward your grandparents. The reason was obvious, as you already know.
"When they tried to avoid a truck on a curve, the brakes failed, and the car went off the cliff with both of them inside… That's exactly what happened." Renee's face was drained of color as she calmly recounted, almost as if she was describing someone else's life. There wasn't a trace of sadness or guilt on her face.
Giselle felt her blood run cold when she heard all of those details. Her mind went blank, and it took her a long while to come back to her senses. The image of her grandparents' bodies kept replaying in her mind.
"So… you killed your adoptive parents with your own hands?" Giselle asked in a low voice.
"Yes." At this point, Renee felt she had nothing left to lose. Even if people found out her secret or even if she was killed for it, she didn't care anymore.
The very next second, Giselle raised her hand and slapped Renee hard. The latter was caught off guard, but she only let out a mirthless chuckle; she didn't retaliate.
