Giselle had been wrapped in the joy of wedding preparations, but the moment Grace mentioned children, her mood plunged straight into shadow again.
It was true. Ever since the abortion years ago, she and Donovan had shared a bed countless times, never once taking precautions, yet she had never gotten pregnant again. That wasn't normal.
If it truly couldn't be helped, then perhaps Dorothea and Grace were right. Perhaps surrogacy would be the only option. She tried to soothe herself with that thought.
…
Days slipped by, and their wedding day drew closer.
That morning, Donovan needed to speak with Ethan in person about a work matter. He walked to the chairman's office and pushed the door open without hesitation.
He didn't expect to find another familiar face inside, Gideon.
"Don?" Ethan looked up, surprised by the sudden appearance.
When he noticed Donovan's gaze fall on Gideon, he hurried to explain. "I asked Gideon to come in because we needed to discuss an issue with his company. Sit for a moment. I'll send him out."
Gideon, for his part, didn't react. Seeing Donovan again stirred no visible emotion in him. He picked up his phone and walked silently toward the door.
Just as he reached it, Donovan suddenly spoke. "Wait."
Donovan reached into his pocket, took out a wedding invitation, and handed it to him. "Next month, on the 12th, Giselle and I are getting married. You're welcome to attend."
Gideon froze for two seconds before taking the invitation. He said nothing, then left quickly with the invitation in hand.
Only when he returned to his car did he open it.
At some point, a woman appeared before him, standing over him with her arms crossed, looking down in judgment.
He lifted his head.
It was Marselle. Again.
For months, she had been haunting him, appearing again and again. She already knew his name, his identity, and knew he was Ethan's illegitimate son. And he knew her background as well.
But he had never spared her a real glance. She, however, clung to him like something he couldn't shake off.
"What happened? Seeing them get married shattered you all over again?" Marselle's mockery was laced with anger.
"Get out!" Gideon barked.
