Things got worse when a second video appeared. Renee was badly beaten and barely conscious, murmuring over and over that she needed to see her daughter. The clip went viral instantly, sparking a storm of speculation and panic.
That evening, Giselle leaned against the headboard, scrolling through endless comments about the kidnapping. After hours of reading, her head started to spin.
She set her phone down and asked Donovan, "Do you think this plan is working? At this rate, if Anne doesn't show up, the police will find Renee in a day or two anyway."
"Relax," Donovan said confidently. "It won't happen that fast."
"With the police mobilized and the case blowing up online, I figure the kidnappers won't last more than a few days before getting caught," Giselle added.
"I've already handled it on the police side," Donovan said knowingly. "For at least the next two weeks, they're guaranteed not to get caught."
Giselle looked at him in surprise and whispered, "You pulled some strings?"
"Money talks," he replied simply.
Giselle nodded, finally understanding what was going on.
