Tony didn't call the police. His mind was tangled with worry and uncertainty as he followed Giselle's instructions.
The meeting took place at Orrensund Bridge on the outskirts of the city at 6:00 am. Years ago, Donovan and Gideon had met the kidnappers here to exchange Giselle for her captors. Time had passed, but now the bridge was once again the site of a tense exchange.
The kidnappers' car came to a stop on the bridge. Inside, three men carried out the plan. The driver sat in front, while the two large, muscular men who had taken Renee that night sat on either side of her in the back.
She was bruised and sore from being held captive, but other than a few slaps and kicks, she hadn't been seriously hurt. The long days of darkness and fear had left her mind foggy and her spirit drained.
Even so, when her eyes landed on a blurry but familiar figure at the far end of the bridge, her heart nearly jumped out of her chest.
"It's…" Renee tried to say it, but her excitement and nerves left her speechless.
She stared at the figure, frozen for a moment, and then words burst out in a frantic rush. "It's Anne, my daughter… It's her! I have to…"
One of the kidnappers snapped, "Is that really your daughter? Look carefully and don't try anything."
"It's her," Renee said, forcing herself to breathe.
Tears welled in her eyes as she added, "It's my daughter. I have to see her. I need to get to her."
Renee could hardly believe her eyes. The face she had longed to see so many times was finally in front of her. She wept, trembling as she reached out to touch her daughter's face, desperate to make sure she was really there.
"Anne, is it really you?"
When Renee finally felt her daughter's warm, living face under her palm, her whole body trembled, and her tears came even harder. "Is it real, Anne? You're alive. You really came back to me. I'm not dreaming, am I? God, I've missed you so much. You're alive."
"Mom," Anne said, holding her tightly.
Though her eyes were red and her heart was racing, she wasn't crying like Renee. She was surprisingly calm. "Mom, don't cry. I'm just glad you're safe. Let's go home. I've been wanting to go home for so long. I really want to be home."
