"Yes, yes," Renee held Anne tightly, as if letting go for even a second might make this moment vanish again.
When she finally released her, she couldn't stop staring at her daughter's face, taking in every detail. Tears streamed down her cheeks once more.
"Let's go," Anne said calmly.
She didn't let the reunion sweep her away in emotion. Instead, she helped Renee to her feet, ready to guide her to the car.
Just as they turned around, Anne saw a Rolls-Royce approaching the bridge. The license plate was all too familiar.
The driver's side door swung open, and Donovan stepped out. Their eyes locked immediately.
At that moment, Anne froze, staring at him like a lifeless shell.
When Donovan saw Anne again, his stern face showed almost no change. There was no surprise, no panic, no anger, no confusion, and no wandering thoughts. He appeared perfectly calm.
To him, Anne had never mattered, whether she had disappeared or somehow managed to return. He didn't care about her fate. The only reason he was here was to see for himself if she was really back.
As Renee noticed the tense standoff, she wiped her tears and said, "Donovan, I know you were behind this kidnapping. Whatever your reasons, I still thank you for giving me a chance to see my daughter. As for everything else, I don't have the strength to deal with it right now."
All Renee wanted was to take Anne home as quickly as possible. Questions of revenge or justice were secondary, and she didn't have the energy for them.
With that, he returned to his car, started the engine, and drove off. His headlights disappeared down the winding mountain road.
The kidnappers' car left as well.
The bridge was left with only Renee and Anne, reunited at last. Overwhelmed with emotion, Renee held Anne tightly, sobbing uncontrollably. "Anne, when did you come back? Why didn't you come home? Where have you been all this past year? Why didn't you contact me? What happened to you—"
"Mom, stop," Anne said calmly. "Let's go home first. We'll talk there."
"Okay," Renee replied.
