Anne remained calm and composed. "I've already endured the greatest pain and humiliation to ever exist in this world. What else could I possibly not bear now?"
Seeing her worn but steady expression, Renee realized she was no longer the reckless woman she once was. Her heart ached as she couldn't help but worry if Anne had developed any psychological illness.
After all, surviving such a place might leave the body intact, yet the psychological trauma incurred could last a lifetime. It could be untreatable.
Tony nodded. "Anne, I'm glad to see you finally grow up. I just hope that in the future, you can truly let go of your grudges with Donovan and Giselle. Live your own life and stay safe—that's what matters most."
"Yeah, Dad." Anne sneered. "You're absolutely right."
"Let's put all that behind us now," Renee said. "You just came home, so get some proper rest. I'll stay with you tonight, and you shouldn't go anywhere else for now."
"Okay."
…
After seeing Anne, Donovan told Giselle about it once he was back home.
"She really just appeared like that," she mused, unsettled. "Does she still look the same? No lasting injuries or anything?"
"I didn't pay attention," he said nonchalantly. "I just took one glance and made sure it was her. That's all. I didn't care about anything else."
