When Giselle woke up, she found herself lying in a hospital bed. She was still feeling slightly dizzy.
She glanced up and saw Donovan standing by the floor-to-ceiling window with his back to her, staring out into space.
"Darling," she called out weakly, trying to sit up.
Hearing her, Donovan immediately turned around. "You're awake?"
He rushed over to the bed and carefully helped her sit up, his face filled with exhaustion and worry. "How do you feel? Is there pain anywhere?"
That was when Giselle noticed the pain in her left hand. She looked down and saw it wrapped in bandages. The memory of the bloody scene back in the office slowly came back to her, and she suddenly felt a tight knot in her chest.
"I'm fine," she replied.
Trying to sound calm, she continued, "You know everything, don't you? I guess I didn't do so badly. I managed to hurt her too."
Donovan sighed, unable to stop himself from pulling her into a tight embrace. His voice dropped low with guilt. "I'm sorry. It's my fault. I put you through so much. I'm so sorry."
Just an hour ago, he had gotten the call and rushed over to the hospital. When he saw her covered in blood and unconscious, he had been so furious that he had clenched his fists and slammed them into the wall.
When he learned the full truth about her injury, his anger flared so intensely that he almost ran to the other room to strangle Anne. The doctors and nurses had to hold him back before he could calm down.
While waiting for Giselle to wake up, he felt torn apart with guilt. He had learned his lesson and replayed countless ways to protect her in his mind.
So he had left Anne alive and didn't have her killed. He left her to fend for herself abroad, as long as she never returned to the country and never bothered him again.
But he never imagined she'd find a way back.
When she returned, she wasn't the petty, scheming woman with her little tricks anymore. She had turned into a ruthless and savage monster.
As Giselle held on to his hand quietly, still shaken by the ordeal, the door to the hospital room opened.
The attending doctor walked in, holding a few test reports. He smiled as he spoke to Donovan. "Mrs. Kane is fine for now. The brain scan shows only minor issues with its electrical activity, but there are no serious issues otherwise. The pregnancy indicators are stable, but she is a little anemic…"
