Bertha screamed in agony.
Hearing the scream, Giselle couldn't take it anymore. She stepped forward and yelled, "It's me! I'm Giselle Holt! What do you want? Tell me, but don't hurt her!"
"You're the new president?" Conrad asked suspiciously.
Before Giselle could answer, Donovan moved in front of her to shield her, shouting, "Say what you want! Now!"
Conrad finally burst out frantically. "I'm here today because of Renee! Two years ago, she promised to buy all our medicinal herbs and told us to expand production at our factory.
"I invested 200 million dollars, planting a lot of crops, and this year she suddenly backed out of the deal! Everything rotted in the fields! I went bankrupt because of it, and my father also died because he couldn't withstand the stress from the crushing debt anymore."
He took a deep breath before continuing, "I went to find Renee, but she said she's no longer the owner! She told me to look for the new president if I want any compensation! But you've been hiding from me too. I had no choice!"
Hearing the explanation, Giselle let out a subtle sigh of relief and tried to speak gently. "If it's about money, you could've communicated with me. I haven't been in the office these days, that's all.
"Listen, if this is a payment we truly owe you, I'll pay it right now, even if it's a billion dollars. Just please stop hurting her. Let her go, okay? If it's money you want, we can settle this."
"Don't take me for a fool!" Conrad snapped, growing more hysterical. "You think I don't know how people like you operate? You'll make me jump through a hundred hoops before giving me a dime!"
He added, "I've already lost everything! I don't care anymore! If you want your employee to live, you'll come with me right away. I'll let her go when the money hits my account. Move! Trade places with her! Or I'll kill her right now! Hurry up!"
Before Giselle could respond, Donovan yanked her back. In a low voice, he said to her, "Leave now. I'll deal with him. Go! It's dangerous here."
Bertha was being hurt because of her, and Giselle couldn't stand it at all, even though she wasn't the one in pain. She shouted back, "You need to calm down! Let's talk this through. Maybe there's another way…"
Conrad gripped Bertha's throat with one hand and pointed the knife at Giselle with the other. He screamed, "Shut up and get over here! Don't test my patience! Come here and—"
But before he could finish his sentence, a sharp object suddenly flew through the air and hit him squarely in the wrist.
He cried out in pain as the knife slipped from his grasp.
At that moment, a figure launched forward.
