"Yes, sir," Chris responded.
Just then, Giselle stepped up, a smile spreading across her face. "What a coincidence to run into you here. You're the one who interviewed for the bodyguard position last week, right?"
Chris paused for a moment, his eyes unconsciously lingering on her face for a brief second before he lowered his head again. "Yes, that was me."
"What you did just now was really dangerous," Giselle remarked. "But it was very cool. No wonder you're from Usna's Special Forces. I have to say, I'm impressed."
"Thanks," Chris answered quietly, his gaze still on the floor.
He seemed to struggle with speaking Valanthean, as if he only knew basic vocabulary.
"So, what brings you here today?" Giselle asked.
While Donovan watched in silence, Giselle continued the conversation, clearly showing a lot more interest in Chris than he did.
Chris looked a little stiff. "I came here for work."
"Work?" Giselle was confused. "What kind of work? I've never seen you before."
Chris hesitated for a moment, as if he was putting words together in his mind, before saying, "I saw you were hiring security staff. So, I decided to try."
Giselle's eyes widened in realization. Ever since the attack by Anne, she had asked the admin department to recruit more security personnel, especially younger veterans.
She didn't expect Chris to have noticed the job posting and come forward to interview for it. He even helped handle a crisis that the police couldn't manage.
"Tell me your background. Briefly."
"Okay."
Chris straightened up. Not meeting Donovan's gaze, he stared at the coffee table in front of him without any expression and spoke about his background.
He spoke in broken Valanthean, repeating much of what he had said in the interview before. His family was from Guilford in Valanthea, and his parents died when he was very young. He was raised by a different Valantian family abroad, and then he spoke of his time in the Usna Special Forces.
Given Chris' naturally introverted nature, his expression remained stiff and rigid like a statue. Despite his extraordinary physical abilities, he seemed to lack any social grace.
When he finished, Donovan regarded him with a steady gaze. "What are your salary expectations?"
