At that moment, the nearby staff rushed over to help Anne up.
Although the incident had happened too suddenly for her to react, Anne was uninjured. However, her face was pale, and she was trembling with fear.
Yet, right now, her gaze was fixed squarely on Chris.
Seeing Chris' hands still wrapped protectively around Giselle, a look of obvious rage flashed through Anne's eyes. She just stared at him, unblinking.
Chris, however, did not make eye contact with Anne. Instead, he looked down and asked Giselle with concern, "Are you hurt? Is your stomach okay?"
"No," Giselle replied. Once the shock wore off, she realized Chris was holding her quite intimately.
She quickly pushed his hands away.
"Sorry." Chris realized he had crossed a line and took a few steps back.
"Thank you for that," Giselle said. She looked at the smashed crate on the ground, her heart still pounding against her ribs.
She realized that without Chris' quick reflexes, she would have met a terrible fate. Even if the impact hadn't been fatal, the injuries alone would have cost her the baby.
The thought sent a chill down her spine, making it hard to breathe.
In that moment, she felt a profound sense of gratitude toward Chris again. Aside from a simple "thank you", she did not know what else to say.
Giselle immediately turned to question the warehouse manager who had just rushed over. "How do you manage this place? How could such a major safety accident happen?"
She reasoned that if such a major safety incident could occur during a mere coincidental inspection, it raised the alarming question of how many other accidents had taken place when she was not around to supervise.
"I am sorry, Ms. Holt," the warehouse manager, Andy Wesley, stammered, unable to lift his head in embarrassment. "This is my fault. It was negligence in my daily work! I will definitely strengthen on-site improvements later and ensure this kind of accident never happens again! I am truly sorry!"
"There will not be a 'later'," Giselle said mercilessly. "Making mistakes with basic loading and unloading is a major failure in your duties. Expect a formal disciplinary notice."
"Huh? Ms. Holt, I—" Andy was shocked.
"Have some warm water," Chris said.
Giselle opened her eyes just as he placed a cup of water he had poured for her on her desk.
At the same time, her gaze locked with his.
In this moment, Giselle could not help but stare straight into his eyes. After staring for a while, an inexplicable tremor ran through her heart.
She felt as if she had seen those eyes somewhere before, but she could not remember where. Her mind was blank.
Ever since she had been critically injured in the cliff fall, while she did not have total amnesia, her memory had been affected. Details about things from long ago were hazy.
Giselle knew what she had gone through, but the specific scenes were blurry in her mind. This was especially true for people she had only met a few times or had never interacted with deeply. Those memories were even foggier.
"Thanks." She offered him a small smile, then picked up the cup and took a sip of water to calm her nerves.
