"We should stop and buy some gifts first. We can't just show up for lunch empty-handed." Giselle proposed.
"Don't be ridiculous," Donovan said, rolling his eyes at her again. "You are just going home to eat. Why would you buy gifts? Do you think you're a guest?"
She replied, "Oh, right!"
Soon enough, they were back in the car. Chris, acting like a pack mule, hauled the mountain of baby supplies they had just bought into the trunk before climbing back into the driver's seat.
When they arrived, Dorothea was overjoyed to see them. "Giselle, you're here! Come, go sit in the dining room. The food is already on the table."
This time, Dorothea paid Donovan no mind whatsoever. She immediately fussed over Giselle, gently holding her arm. "Be careful. The housekeeper just mopped the floor, and it's quite slippery. Watch your step."
"Thank you." Giselle was still not quite used to Dorothea's sudden attentiveness.
After Dorothea personally seated her, her gaze drifted to Giselle's flat stomach. "How have the last two months been? Is your appetite okay? Are you still throwing up?"
Giselle replied, "No, I'm fine. We just went for a checkup today and all the indicators are normal."
Dorothea continued, "That is good to hear. Once you pass the three-month mark, things will stabilize.
"Your physical condition is delicate, so you must be careful. Don't be as careless as you used to be, especially with your diet. Even if you don't feel like eating, you have to force yourself. You are too slim-"
"Mom," Donovan interrupted, unable to stand the nagging. "That's enough. You start chirping the second we walk in. I've reminded her of these small things."
"I'm just caring for you two," Dorothea replied.
It was Ethan who glared fiercely at Grace. "If you don't have anything good to say, just shut up and eat your food."
Grace scoffed. "Eat? These dishes were all ordered by Dorothea specifically for Giselle's pregnancy diet. How much can I possibly eat?"
"Act your age. Why are you being so petty?" Dorothea did not bother hiding her displeasure with Grace. "Giselle is carrying the future of this family. She is our top priority. They rarely come over for a visit, so why are you trying to make this about you?"
"Yes, yes. You are absolutely right. The burden of continuing the bloodline rests entirely on Giselle now. I’m just an old woman who can't bear children anymore, so I suppose I have no value to this family whatsoever," Grace said, her voice dripping with passive-aggressive bitterness.
Seeing that Grace was making a fool of herself and ruining the mood, Ethan decided it was time to change the subject.
His expression turned grave. "Donovan, Giselle. Since we are all here, there is a serious matter I need to discuss with you. I want your input."
