Breaking Mr. Cold (Giselle and Donovan) novel Chapter 737

After all, they'd been together day and night for nearly two months. Even if Chris was just a bodyguard and her assistant, Giselle had long since grown used to Chris' presence. She was used to the meticulous protection this man provided.

If he were truly fired over this, she would feel empty inside. The sense of discomfort and loss was real, and she wouldn't accept it.

Earlier, however, all her attention had been on saving the baby, and she had no energy to interfere.

"This time was a serious failure. If it wasn't intentional, I can hardly think of another explanation," Donovan said thoughtfully.

"Intentional? How?"

Giselle, however, didn't think along those lines at all. "People have their needs. It's not like he's forbidden to use the restroom. And that restroom was indeed quite far from where I was. Plus, with the plants in the plantation blocking the view, even if he heard us yelling, it would've taken time for him to react and rush over. He already did what he could."

Donovan asked in a low voice, "Why did something happen precisely in the few minutes he was gone? And why, before he left, did the plantation owner also make an excuse to leave, just to leave you and another woman behind?"

Hearing this, Giselle paused slightly as she replayed the scene in her head.

First, Jeffrey got a call and suddenly said he needed to deal with something about his car. Not long after, Chris left as well. Then she and Nora ran into the feral dogs.

Everything seemed a little too coincidental.

But when she thought of Chris' usual behavior, especially how he'd risked his life for her again and again, she couldn't see a shred of selfishness in him. His loyalty bordered on something almost foolish. How could he suddenly fail in his duties today?

She really couldn't figure it out. Thinking too much gave her a headache. Combined with the signs of threatened miscarriage, she didn't want to dwell on it.

"Let's call the police," she said.

After walking out of the hospital, Chris hailed a cab by the road and gave a random destination.

Sitting silently in the back, the reality of being fired left his mind in complete turmoil. He didn't even know where he was going, nor what his next step should be. It left him annoyed and restless.

Just then, his phone rang again.

He took it out and glanced at the screen. It was another unfamiliar number belonging to Anne.

He hadn't wanted to answer, but in this moment of utter defeat and having nowhere to go, he forced himself to pick up. "Hello?"

"I want to see you. Now!" Anne's tone over the phone was sharp. "Hurry up, I have to see you immediately!"
