Breaking Mr. Cold (Giselle and Donovan) novel Chapter 791

Chris managed a tight smile at the jab but stayed silent.

Donovan certainly knew that Chris had pushed himself to the limit to please Georgia for the benefit of the company. He valued him even more now, yet he dropped a casual remark. "Don't worry about it. Consider this a work injury. I will make sure you get double the compensation."

"Thanks," replied Chris.

As long as Donovan remained in the dark about his true identity, Chris could handle anything. The rest was just noise. He would happily please an old woman if it meant keeping his cover intact.

"Let's head out." Donovan stood up and tossed him the car keys. "We are going to that dinner."

Chris fell into step behind him just like always walking toward the elevator.

As they left, Chris could not help but glance back at the familiar office and everything around it. He had this nagging feeling that his time here was running out. Every time he walked out that door, it felt like it could be the last.

When they reached the parking lot, Donovan did something out of character. He climbed into the passenger seat.

In the past, he had always sat in the back, acting the part of the superior while treating Chris as a mere driver or assistant. It was a way of maintaining the class divide between them, whether intentional or not.

But this time he sat up front. Subconsciously, he was treating Chris as an equal. The barrier was dissolving.

Chris noticed the shift immediately. It stirred a complicated feeling in his chest.

As they drove, Donovan broke the silence. "How are things with Ms. Laker?"

"Not bad." Chris kept his eyes on the road and answered simply. "She is a nice person."

"Is that so?" Donovan let out a short huff. "Well, you have a woman now. Don't bring up resignation again."

Chris gripped the steering wheel tighter. He stared straight ahead, unable to find a response.

Just then, Donovan's phone buzzed with a video call from Giselle.
