The next day, Chris dropped Georgia off at her workplace and bade her goodbye.
As Georgia had agreed to his terms, he promptly got in the car and immediately sent Donovan the good news.
Alas, Donovan never replied to his texts after a long while.
Chris wouldn't have been bothered if Donovan didn't reply promptly or didn't reply at all, really. If anything, he would think it was normal. After all, Donovan was the CEO of a company. It was completely normal for him to be swamped with work.
So, it was honestly in character for him to skip over unimportant texts.
Yet, Chris couldn't help but feel antsy when he saw that Donovan hadn't replied.
As he holed himself up in his apartment, he tried to force himself to get some rest. Alas, sleep kept slipping out of his grasp as an inexplicable sense of frustration rose within him.
He checked his phone repeatedly, waiting for a response. An emotion he couldn't quite place burrowed itself in his heart, and he ended up smoking one cigarette after another. Toward the end, his floor was covered with cigarette butts while his apartment was filled with a noxious mix of smoke and ash.
It had been years since he'd been afraid of anything, but he couldn't help but feel a flicker of fear just then. He was afraid that the reason Donovan hadn't responded in so long was that he'd already learned the truth from Giselle.
Yes, that had to be it. Donovan had to know everything by now.
Giselle shared his bed, so how could she stop herself from spilling the beans?
His heart clenched in red-hot fury as his brain went to the worst-case scenario before slowly cooling to ice. It had gotten so bad that he couldn't help but feel that his limbs had gone numb. His eyes stared blankly at the ceiling as he kept smoking.
As time passed, he could even lie to himself that he was no one from nowhere with no destination in mind.
His phone rang just as he was falling apart, making his heart jolt.
He pushed the door of the CEO's office open only to find Donovan still wearing a hard expression while discussing something with a senior executive.
Once they were alone, Donovan lounged against the couch and glanced at his phone. Only then did he see that Chris had helped Georgia see things their way last night.
On top of that, Chris had also completed his task ahead of schedule. It was amazing because he'd instructed Chris to use "special means" to deal with the reporter who'd been running a smear campaign against the company the day before yesterday.
Yet, Chris had done all that and forwarded the relevant audio evidence to his phone ages ago.
Donovan couldn't help but slump in relief when he saw that Chris had resolved all his problems one after another.
He deliberately looked Chris over and noticed he looked exhausted. He had the characteristic look of a dead-tired office worker with his dull eyes and sunken sockets. It was as if something was weighing on him, so Donovan couldn't help teasing, "Was it really that good last night?"
