On the way back, Giselle sat in the back seat, staring blankly for a long time.
After such a heavy emotional blow, she went to the hospital for another prenatal checkup. The examination showed nothing serious, but the doctor arranged for her to lie down and receive oxygen for a while.
Lying there, she kept hearing the words Vivienne had shouted at her. Each word felt like a slap across her face, leaving her chilled to the bone.
She had never imagined that the one relationship she had devoted herself to for so many years would end this way; she hadn't been even slightly prepared.
In truth, she should have seen it coming. From the moment Vivienne gave birth to a child who shared a blood bond with Renee, their relationship was destined to drift apart. She simply hadn't expected that over all these years, Vivienne had harbored so much resentment—that she hadn't actually been happy in their relationship.
Giselle had never intended to flaunt her superiority. She cherished the friendship with all her heart, shielding Vivienne as though she were her own sister. And yet, in the end, even that bond proved powerless against the weight of human nature.
Indeed, the fickleness of human nature, and with it the unraveling of what once seemed unbreakable.
She knew Vivienne's complaints were merely superficial excuses. The fundamental reason was the enormous financial temptation Renee had offered her. People ultimately couldn't escape that one word—money.
Although she understood the betrayal intellectually, her heart felt hollow when she thought of how they had once supported each other. She couldn't accept such a blow right now. Everything felt like a dream that had suddenly shattered, with no way back.
…
Another month slipped by quietly.
