Breaking Mr. Cold (Giselle and Donovan) novel Chapter 805

After lunch, Donovan asked Heath to call Chris in, saying he wanted to arrange his upcoming work. But when Chris entered, he looked disheveled and drenched in sweat, his clothes damp from labor.

"Where did you go?" Donovan asked, sizing him up.

Before Chris could speak, Heath smiled and spoke up for him. "Chris is very diligent. He just finished trimming the lawn and the landscaping trees—he even washed two of the cars. He's been working non-stop—quick and efficient."

He was asked to eat, but instead of sitting at the table, he went outside to find work.

Donovan didn't offer any verbal praise, merely giving him a look that suggested he was working too hard. He noticed the short-sleeved shirt Chris was wearing looked old and worn out. Since it was now soaked with sweat, he casually instructed the housekeeper, Joanne. "Joanne, go upstairs and find a few of my clothes that still have the tags on. Have Chris change into them."

"Alright."

Once Chris processed the command, he immediately stopped her. "No, I—"

"What, not good enough for you?" Donovan interrupted.

"No," Chris replied, looking flustered and awkward. "That wouldn't be appropriate. I... I'll just go home later and change into my own clothes."

Although Giselle also felt Donovan's change in attitude was abrupt, she tried to smooth things over. "How about this, Joanne? Go to the wardrobe and find some of Donovan's old clothes—the ones he doesn't wear anymore and was planning to discard. It's a waste to toss them, but they take up space."

She turned to Chris with a half-smile. "You don't mind second-hand clothes, do you?"

"Go on and get busy. Who needs your company?"

Although Giselle spoke lightly, watching him head upstairs with Chris left her with a vague, unsettling sense of unease. From what she knew, Donovan had never been this close to any man before. The only person he'd ever shown such favor was his nephew, Zachary, and even that was simple family affection.

Yet over the past few months, he had grown increasingly close to Chris, a man with no blood ties and a completely different social standing. Not only did they spend most of their days together, but Donovan also kept giving him gifts and favors that far exceeded the boundaries of a normal employment relationship.

Giselle didn't want to think any further. It would only give her a headache and affect the baby.

Accompanied by Joanne, she went outside to walk a few laps. Her belly felt heavy, but she knew the movement would be good for the delivery.
