Over the next few days, Donovan remained busy at the office, discussing a project with several overseas R&D personnel. The team was from Castellan, and since Chris was proficient in Castellanor, he handled the reception, interpretation, and accommodations.
That afternoon, Chris took the R&D team to a branch office for a product tour, while Donovan stayed at headquarters for a quarterly summary meeting. He worked until 6:00 pm before finally returning to his office, exhausted.
He had just reclined in his leather chair, planning to rest briefly, when his phone chimed with a WhatsApp notification. He picked it up to see a message from Peter, his lawyer friend in Usna.
Peter had sent a photo, followed by a brief text.
"The person you asked me to investigate? I found another photo. Turns out he actually knew Sabin Monroe from Malithorn."
Donovan tapped the image and zoomed in. It showed several men from Soutara posing in front of a church. The man at the center was Sabin Monroe—the mastermind behind the high-profile murder of five Valantian crew members. He had been captured in a cross-border operation years ago and executed by firing squad.
But Monroe wasn't the focus of the photo.
In the front row, third from the left, Donovan spotted a face that felt both unfamiliar and hauntingly familiar. It was Chris, before his facial reconstruction.
Worried he might be mistaken, Donovan pulled up the picture Peter had sent months earlier—the one of Chris posing with Usna soldiers—and compared them. It was undeniably the same man.
