Breaking Mr. Cold (Giselle and Donovan) novel Chapter 807

When Chris saw what was on the phone, he instantly froze.

Seeing the old photo appear on Donovan's screen made his heart hammer against his ribs. His face paled, and his hand shook so slightly he could barely hold onto the phone.

"Yes, that's me," Chris said, lifting his eyes to Donovan. He made no attempt to offer an excuse.

Donovan crushed his cigarette in the ashtray, tipped his head back, and closed his eyes for a moment, as if forcing himself to maintain control. "The people in the photo—what was your relationship with them?"

"I used to do business with them," Chris replied, his voice steady.

"What kind of business?"

"The rubber business." He stuck to his story.

Donovan suddenly slammed his palm down on the desk. "Tell the truth! What exactly were you doing?"

Since Chris was standing beside a man like Sabin, the only logical conclusion was illegal dealings. Donovan had already made up his mind.

He slumped back into his chair, legs propped on the desk, recalling Chris' words. His chest heaved with rage. He couldn't tell if he was angrier at the man's suspicious past or the way he had just stormed out.

In all honesty, he wasn't just angry; he was consumed by a restless agitation. And beneath it all, he felt an indescribable sense of loss.

This stubborn streak was nothing new. In the past, when Donovan reprimanded him, Chris wouldn't hang his head or offer meek apologies like other employees. He would simply fall into a cold, stony silence.

Chris was arrogant to the core, yet fiercely loyal. Arrogance and loyalty coexisted within him. He had the strength to hold his head high and the resilience to bow when necessary. It was this quality that set him apart—and the very thing Donovan admired most.
