"Don't say a word." Giselle was in unbearable pain. She could only clutch Donovan's hand tightly, her breathing shallow and jagged. "Don't talk to me. I'm in so much pain I want to kill you. Damn it, no one told me it would hurt this much."
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. It's my fault. I was wrong."
Though he was a man who had weathered many storms, this was his first time witnessing a delivery. Watching Giselle tremble, drenched in a cold sweat, he wished he could take her place. He was overwhelmed with a mixture of guilt and heartache.
"How about we switch to a C-section?" As the contractions peaked, Giselle no longer cared about her birth plan; she only wanted to end this bone-wrenching torment.
Donovan was terrified for her, but he used every ounce of gentleness he possessed to comfort her. "Honey, you've already endured the hardest part. Switching to a C-section now would mean all that pain was for nothing. Stay with me. Let's hold on just a little longer. It's almost over."
"Damn it," Giselle groaned through the pain. "Donovan, you bastard, go to hell. In the next life, you give birth. I feel like I'm going to die."
"Okay, okay. We won't have any more. Just this one, never again. It's all my fault. I'm sorry, honey. Once we get through this, everything I have is yours."
After six hours of grueling labor, the loud, sharp cry of a newborn finally echoed through the room.
"Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Kane. It's a healthy, beautiful baby girl. Six pounds, two ounces." The doctor lifted the wailing newborn with a smile.
She had given birth safely, and when told the baby was healthy, Giselle burst into tears of joy.
She went through the motions of praising the baby before turning to Giselle. "Giselle, this was a natural birth, right?"
"Yes." Giselle smiled. "I almost gave up and asked for surgery midway, but I'm glad I held on. If I'd had a C-section, the recovery would've been far harder. It wouldn't feel this easy now."
"A natural birth is best," Grace said pointedly. "That way, you can start preparing for a second baby right away. If you'd had a C-section, you'd have to wait at least three years."
Donovan replied coolly, "We're not having more. Just this one."
"Not having more? Are you joking?" Grace ignored him, addressing the exhausted Giselle instead. "Giselle, you're still young. It doesn't matter that the first is a girl. You can take some time next year to try for a son."
