"Mrs. Kane, I had the door open while I was cleaning just now. I didn't notice this gentleman coming in. Do you know him? If not, I'll just—"
"I know him," Giselle said to the cleaner. "He's someone I know. Please step out for now, we have something to discuss."
"Oh, alright."
Once the room was empty, Giselle looked at Chris, who radiated a tense, almost threatening energy.
"Why are you here again? Didn't we agree to handle this over the phone?"
"I'm running out of time." He stepped closer to her bed, looming over her as he met her gaze, his words tinged with hidden pain. "Transfer the money to me, and everything ends between us. You don't need to worry about revenge. If possible, I'll pay you back…"
He had always been a gloomy, withdrawn man of few words, almost emotionless in any situation. Yet today, he had completely changed. He was saying so much, his tone pleading.
Giselle couldn't help but feel baffled.
"I can give you the money." She lowered her voice. "But you have to tell me the truth right now. If it's something important and understandable, I'll help you."
Hearing this, Chris finally couldn't hold it together anymore.
He took a deep breath. "My son... has been kidnapped. They want a ransom."
"Your son?" Giselle couldn’t help but feel suspicious again. "Didn't you say you had no family? That they were all... gone? Where did this son come from?"
She suspected that this so-called son was just an excuse. If he were lying to get money for illegal dealings, the consequences would be even more serious.
"Nora, are you toying with me on purpose? Are you going to agree or not? You clearly can do it! Why do you have to keep on torturing me like this?"
"I—" Giselle was rattled by him. "Can you calm down a little? This is kidnapping. We're talking about something serious. The police have experience handling cases like this. You can't just hand over such a huge sum right away!"
"The police?" Chris repeated the words under his breath, letting out a scornful, cold laugh.
He suddenly realized that he and Giselle lived in completely different worlds.
How could she possibly understand the environment he grew up in? How could she understand that in his world, the police and the law were never solutions at all?
With time running out, Chris decided to take the step he least wanted to take.
