Chris' mind was focused mainly on Billy.
It had been five years. Billy had been just a toddler who had barely learned to walk and could not even speak when he went missing. Now, he was a six-year-old boy. Billy was a stranger to him, just as he was a stranger to Billy.
However, blood ties were powerful. Billy's face looked so similar to the memories of his late wife and his eldest son, Brandon. Chris' paternal love did not need time to grow. It surged the moment he saw him.
Yet, Billy remained in a state of rejection. He did not say a word from beginning to end, acting like a mute. He simply stared at Chris with eyes full of cold hatred.
Chris tried to wipe Billy's face with a wet wipe, but Billy ferociously slapped his hand away. He snatched the wipes and threw them out the window.
Chris turned to grab more tissues. The others had not reacted yet when Billy suddenly climbed up the open car window with lightning speed.
Half his body was already out of the window. Just as he was about to jump from the speeding car, Chris grabbed him in time. He yanked Billy back into the seat and shouted for Hank to lock the windows immediately.
This move shocked everyone. Chris was terrified. He pinned Billy down firmly and refused to let him move an inch.
However, Billy possessed strength that did not match his age. He struggled with all his might as if he were trying to escape for his life. Chris finally lost his temper and slapped Billy across the face.
Donovan, who was sitting on the far left, patted Chris on the shoulder to soothe him. "Be patient. It's normal for him not to recognize you. Move over and let me try."
Chris was indeed getting frustrated, so he agreed to switch places with Donovan.
Unexpectedly, when Donovan sat next to Billy and reached out to pat his head and cheek in an attempt to be gentle, the latter reacted like a crazed beast. He opened his mouth and latched onto Donovan's finger, biting down with a death grip.
If he had stayed in that training base for another four or five years, he would have become a qualified killing machine.
But no matter what, Billy was still alive. He had returned to his biological father. That was the greatest luck of his life. As for his temperament, there was still time to correct it in the future.
The car continued to drive. Billy eventually grew tired from the bumps of the long journey. He ran out of energy to fight and finally fell asleep in Chris' arms.
Chris held his recovered son tight. His mindset underwent a massive change. He used to live day by day, not caring when he died.
But starting from now, he wanted to live a good life.
