“Everything went smoothly, sir. But Ms. Steele didn’t seem to be in a good mood today.” Sebastian’s gaze darkened, the smile fading from his lips. “Not in a good mood?”

“Yes. I called her twice, and both times she drifted off.”

Sebastian frowned, thoughtful. Why was she upset? And it seems like I’m not the reason. Trevor?

“All right. I understand.”

After ending her call with Eugene, Serena looked at the group chat for the acquisition project. She forced herself not to explode in the chat, instead dialing the project’s overall director, Daniel Hart.

Daniel had just returned to his office. His tone was cool. “Hello, who is this?”

Serena remained steady and polite. “Hello, Mr. Hart. I’m Serena Steele from Beaumont Legal.”

Daniel quirked a brow. “Ah, Ms. Steele. How can I help?”

Calling him directly was technically jumping rank. And although Daniel had sensed that something unclear existed between Serena and Sebastian, he hated employees who bypassed hierarchy. Partners doing it irritated him even more.

But Serena didn’t care about his tone. She continued calmly, “Mr. Hart, someone from your side contacted our director yesterday and accused me of misconduct, insisting I be replaced. I wanted to ask–were you aware of this?”

When Adam landed last night, he immediately called Eugene. He said someone from the Levine Group had reported Serena for improper behavior and meddling in someone’s relationship. Worried it would jeopardize their cooperation, Adam removed Serena from the case without Eugene’s approval.

With Eugene’s consent, Serena wanted to go straight to the person in charge at the Levine Group and clarify who had made the accusation. Since Adam couldn’t be relied on to tell the truth, confronting the source directly was her only option.

Daniel was shocked. “That happened?”

He might have been annoyed that she came to complain to him, but the possibility of

“Ms. Steele, I trust your character completely. I’ll investigate immediately and find out who started the rumor. I’ll give you a proper explanation, all right?”

Serena had prepared an entire argument in advance, but to her surprise, Daniel sided with her instead of defending his subordinates.

“That’s fine. With your assurance, Mr. Hart, I feel much better.”

After she hung up, Daniel immediately called for a meeting. But he hadn’t even stepped into the conference room when Sebastian’s message popped up.

‘Daniel, is something wrong with Credence Electronics‘ acquisition?‘

Daniel froze, instantly assuming Serena had contacted the president to complain.

This Ms. Steele… she keeps overturning my assumptions. So she really is important to Mr. Levine.

Then he remembered the social media post Sebastian had shared the day before. His heart thudded as he zoomed in on the image. Reflected faintly in the full–length window was a human silhouette.

It looks a lot like Ms. Steele’s!

A chill swept over him, and he quickly replied, ‘No issues, sir. I’m already looking into the person who spread the rumor about Ms. Steele. I will make sure she receives an explanation.”

Sebastian’s long fingers rolled a silver lighter between them, his voice utterly cold. “Rumor?”

Daniel felt his stomach drop. Only two words echoed in his mind–I’m dead.
