Daniel let out a bitter laugh. Who the hell did it? And of all the people they had to mess with, they just had to pick the one made of nails!

Eugene had already called Adam three times in a row. Adam was getting irritated. “Eugene, is your protege really that precious to you?”

“Mr. Rowe, she’s the most outstanding young attorney we’ve had in the past two years. Of course, I’m going to look out for her. I vouch for her with my name–she’s not the kind of person they’re making her out to be. Mr. Rowe, you can’t just take a couple of rumors at face value and write her off, can you?”

Adam let out a dry chuckle. “I didn’t write her off. She just isn’t suitable for this project right now. Someone personally called me about it, and I have to do them a favor. Switching to another associate doesn’t affect your standing at all. Don’t you agree, Eugene?”

Eugene was about to argue when Adam saw another call coming in and cut him off. “Alright, alright, I have another call. We’ll talk later.”

Adam answered, and the voice on the other end got straight to the point. “Hello, Mr. Rowe? I’m Daniel Hart, the lead on Levine Group’s investment and acquisition this round. My apologies, but I heard someone from our side spread rumors about Ms. Steele. Our CEO is furious. Could you tell me who started it?”

Adam froze. “Rumors? Mr. Levine knows about this too?”

“Yes. He’s very upset and asked me to get to the bottom of it within ten minutes. Mr. Rowe, I have a great deal of respect for Mr. Beaumont and all of his team’s associates. Please don’t misunderstand. I truly had no idea this was happening.”

Adam forced a laugh. “Ah–so that’s what this is about. I always said Ms. Steele was a kind and upright young woman. I never believed she’d be that sort of person.”

Daniel immediately agreed. “Exactly. Ms. Steele is talented and highly capable. Mr. Rowe, so who was it that tried to smear her name?”

After getting the name, Daniel stressed Serena’s importance yet again before hanging up.
