The clerks remained oblivious to their entrance.
“Hey, did Mr. Levine distribute any cash today?” one asked.

“Nope. Ugh, see? They’re both Levines, but not everyone is like the previous Mr. Levine who handed out a generous monetary gift!”
Someone persisted, unwilling to let it drop. “Not even a single cent?”
“Exactly! Not a single cent! And I even helped them record a video! Didn’t even receive one piece of candy.”
“Enough. There’s no obligation for them to give. Stop pushing it.”
But when a clerk glanced toward the door and saw the couple, his grin stiffened instantly.
“Oh… why are you back?” His tone hardened. “Hadn’t you already completed everything?”
Amber’s anger reached a boiling point.
She stormed forward. “So it’s acceptable for clerks to speak ill of people behind their backs?
“This is absurd–coming to city hall for a marriage license, and aside from the processing fee, we’re expected to tip you too? You’re all such avaricious brutes!”
“Miss, mind your tone. We didn’t mention any names. Since when is a casual conversation a crime?”
The clerk’s voice dripped with derision. “You’re as trivial as a pin. If you lack influence, perhaps you should keep your head down and complete your business.”
“What did you just say? Repeat that. Believe it or not, I’ll file a formal complaint!”
Trevor felt a pulse throbbing in his temple. “Enough! Amber, just retrieve the ID. Say nothing
more.”
He already felt humiliated; her causing a scene would only intensify his embarrassment.
The clerk seized the moment. “Oh, the ID. Here, we kept it safe for you. Miss, if we hadn’t been considerate, your ID would’ve misplaced it.”
Amber was reprimanded by the staff and was then berated by Trevor.

Trevor’s head throbbed painfully. The stares from onlookers made the situation feel even more mortifying.
“What are you staring at? Never witnessed a couple argue?”
With that, Trevor pursued her.
The clerk curled his lip in amusement. “They’re finished. I’d bet five dollars they’ll split soon.”
“Cut it out. Control yourself. Enough.”
The service hall descended into silence once more.
Deanna, sitting in the car, saw her adopted daughter burst out crying and dashed toward her. “Amber, what’s wrong? Why are you crying?”
Amber, face streaked with tears and trembling, looked up at Deanna. “Mom, Trevor…”
She wanted to confide in her mom, then suddenly recalled–Deanna was her adoptive mom, but Trevor’s biological mom.
Any grievance would be dismissed with a few curt words.
Today was meant to be the happiest day. Yet the moment she held that marriage license, everything seemed irreversibly altered.
Serena felt an exhilarating sense of triumph upon being reinstated at her position. Even Charles couldn’t help but notice the elation etched across her features.
He let out a soft laugh. “Mrs. Levine, has something delightful occurred?”
If it were news of a pregnancy, that would be extraordinary,
A faint, knowing smile lifted Serena’s lips. “Did Sebastian mention what time he’s expected home tonight?”
She pondered briefly, wondering whether to ask if Daniel had discreetly assisted her behind
