“If Mom knew how we treated the woman she picked,” Sebastian said calmly, “she’d be heartbroken.”
This left Nathan speechless.

But we weren’t the ones who broke off the engagement. Serena had been the one to walk away, hadn’t she?
Nathan honestly didn’t understand his younger brother anymore. Sebastian had always been rigid, but this? Taking a half–joking line their mother once said and treating it like sacred law— it was almost unbelievable.
Each of them lost in their own thoughts, the brothers stepped inside.
Lucinda, of course, was delighted to see her half–financial backer. A casual gift from Uncle Sebastian was worth far more than her usual allowance.
“Uncle Sebastian! You’re back!” she chirped. “Grandpa was just asking about you.”
Sebastian lifted a brow slightly. “Mm. Dad, I’m home.”
Bryce snorted and peered past him. “So you finally remembered this place exists? And what, how long are you planning to keep that wife of yours hidden? You didn’t think getting married was something you could do without my approval, did you?”
Sebastian chuckled lightly. “Legally speaking, parental approval isn’t required anymore. But I still wanted to ask for your opinion.”
He paused, then smiled. “Dad, I’m married. Are you satisfied?”
The old man was displeased. Pah. Calling this “asking for an opinion” after the fact? That is clearly just a notice.
“Dad, don’t be upset,” Sebastian added smoothly. “My wife is beautiful. If I didn’t act fast and someone else snatched her up, that would’ve been a real problem.”
Bryce scoffed. “That beautiful, huh? Someone would have to fight you for her?”
“Of course,” Sebastian replied without hesitation. “But she only has eyes for me. I’m the only one worthy of her.”
The words landed like a bomb.

“Yes, Mr. Levine. Mrs. Levine went back to her room at 10 p.m. She didn’t come out again. But, it seems like she got you a gift,” Charles said.
Sebastian’s lashes flickered. “A gift?”
“Yeah. When I came back, I saw Mrs. Levine put a box in the dining room, then she took it back to her room. I guess she’ll give it to you tomorrow.”
Sebastian nodded lightly, said nothing more, and headed straight upstairs.
He found himself walking toward the main bedroom where she stayed. He really wanted to knock and see what she had bought him right now. But it was too late. He still smelled of alcohol, and he didn’t want to disturb her rest.
Still, when he returned to his own bedroom, his fingers trembled slightly as he picked up the gift box sitting on the nightstand.
He opened it. Inside lay a pair of silver rings.
Sebastian’s normally cool–white skin flushed with a faint red. His eyes and brow, blurred by the alcohol, snapped into sharp focus.
He rolled the silver ring between his thumb and forefinger. His long lashes brushed lightly. That slow, aching sting settled deep in his chest and filled it.
He had tried to resist. But no matter how hard he fought, he couldn’t anymore.
Knock, knock.
“Rena, are you asleep?”
Serena had been drifting off when the knocking started outside her door. Half–awake and irritated, she pulled the blanket over her ears, hoping it would stop. It did not. The sound kept hammering on her nerves.
She threw the covers aside, stomped out of bed, and yanked the door open. “Do you have any idea what time it is? I was already asleep.”
“Sorry,” Sebastian said.
drunk?”
Her almond–shaped eyes, still blazing with anger, collided without warning with his long, shadowed gaze. She caught the faint flush on his cheeks and frowned. “Are you
