Nathan and Deanna had always been the model arranged couple. They treated each other with polite restraint, their relationship lacking any real warmth.
Aaron Levine, the second son, had been completely different with Sophia. The two of them had been inseparable, clinging to each other as though even a single day apart was unbearable.
Bryce had once wondered how he had ended up raising such a hopeless romantic.
Then, Aaron died without warning.
Fortunately, Sophia did not remain trapped in grief forever. She eventually pulled herself back to the surface.
Bryce never expected his daughter–in–law to spend the rest of her life mourning his son.
When news of her remarriage reached him, he gave his sincere blessing.
Unfortunately, that second marriage had not lasted long.
From that point forward, a crack formed between Lucinda and her mother.
By the time Sophia entered her fourth marriage, mother and daughter had erupted into a fierce confrontation. Sadly, that union collapsed again after only three years.
Bryce released a quiet sigh. “Lucinda, come sit beside your mom.”
Lucinda pressed her lips together, offering no reply.
Instead, she dragged the stool next to Serena and lowered herself onto it, her silence loud with defiance.
Bryce’s expression darkened. He was about to speak when Sophia gently interrupted, “Bryce, I will head back after the wedding here. Tomorrow, let’s go see Aaron together.”
Lucinda set down her spoon when her father’s name was mentioned, anger flashing in her eyes. “Grandpa, I’m full. Please enjoy your meal.”
Without sparing anyone a glance, she rose and hurried upstairs.
He looked utterly helpless. “That child. Sophia, please do not take it to heart. I indulged her too much.”

She understood her daughter’s stubborn nature better than anyone. “Are you free tomorrow?”
Bryce responded, “Yes, I will accompany you to see Aaron. Sophia, you really should find someone trustworthy and settle down. Only then will Aaron be able to rest peacefully over there.”
Sophia offered no verbal response. A faint smile crossed her lips before she let the topic fade
away.
Meanwhile, Serena felt uneasy and followed Lucinda upstairs.
Knock, knock.
No response.
Serena let out a soft chuckle. “Lucinda, it’s me.”
A few seconds later, the door slowly opened.
As expected, her best friend’s eyes were rimmed red from crying.
Lucinda had intended to calm herself alone. The moment she saw Serena, the tears surged back without warning.
She collapsed onto the soft mattress. “Rena… if she does not even like me, why did she give birth to me? Dad passed away only a year ago, and she already remarried. Then, what was their love worth?”
Lucinda scrubbed at her face. “Rena, I am not against her remarrying. It just happened too quickly.”
She had not even finished grieving. The one person she believed would mourn with her had been the first to move on.
Serena understood completely.
Their circumstances were similar, although Lucinda’s situation was still far kinder than her
own.
Serena hugged her friend and gently patted her back. “I understand. Truly, I do. But Lucinda, your mother moving on quickly might also be her way of coping. She’s not a cold–hearted
