Nathan wasn’t nearly as touchy as Deanna. “They were just complimenting the baby. Don’t read too much into it. And one thing–don’t even think about causing a scene!”
Deanna felt her annoyance bubble up but swallowed it, choosing silence instead.
Amber lounged on the bed, lips slightly puckered as she answered her phone.
Trevor returned, straightening his tie with a hand. “Who’s calling?”
Amber’s pout deepened. “It’s Mom.”
Even without the speakerphone on, Deanna’s voice was loud enough to cut through.
“Trevor, Sebastian agreed. Finish up in Africale and come straight home!”
Trevor hesitated for a moment. “Uncle Sebastian actually agreed? Since when is he so generous?”
Deanna muttered under her breath, “Yeah… not exactly out of pure generosity. He’s back home as well–maybe family still matters to him a bit.
“Don’t get hung up on why he said yes. Just get home first. Amber, did you hear me? Buy the tickets and head back!
“Cubbie misses both of you like crazy. Keep this up, and your son might not even recognize you.”
Amber fell silent, guilt weighing on her.
She feared Trevor discovering the truth–that the boy wasn’t really his.
No matter what, she had to bury that secret deep.
It wasn’t until Trevor learned of Sebastian’s return that the passage of a full year hit him.
Which also meant Serena was back.
Perhaps it was the distance, perhaps just the lack of contact, but Trevor realized he had thought of her far less over the past year.
“Amber, pack your things. We’re leaving next week.”

“Already?” Amber twisted her lips, hesitant.
Trevor shot her a measured glance. “Already? Amber, don’t you want to see our son?
“I haven’t seen him since he was born. I miss him.”

Amber stiffened, caught off guard. “Of course I do. He’s my flesh and blood. How could I not miss him?”
Trevor’s frown deepened slightly. Somehow, it didn’t feel like she truly longed for their child.
Maybe it was just her youth.
Trevor decided he needed to speed up the return home.
Serena reported to the firm the day after coming back.
Eugene pulled her into a warm embrace. “You look amazing! Welcome back!”
Serena grinned. “Boss, you look great too—you actually seem younger than before.”
She hadn’t noticed before, but Eugene usually stuck to black, white, or gray suits. Today, he was wearing a bold royal blue.
Such a striking color choice–it was unlike him.
Eugene cleared his throat, pretending nonchalance. “It’s nothing.”
A trace of pride flickered across his expression before he asked, “Do I really look younger?”
Serena tried not to laugh but genuinely meant it. “Absolutely. You should wear brighter colors more often.”
He nodded, recalling someone else’s advice.
Serena had brought gifts for her colleagues.
Lily held up a perfume bottle. “Rena, how did you know I liked this scent? Thank you so much.”
