Bryce felt like his eldest grandson’s brain had been stuffed full of glue. The boy seemed completely
useless.
Just looking at them made Bryce furious.
“Old Mr. Levine, please calm down. Why has your blood pressure suddenly gone up?” The department head glanced at the monitor and immediately warned him.
Sebastian’s cold, shadowed eyes revealed his disgust without the slightest attempt to hide it. “Deanna, you should go back. Nathan will stay here with me. Otherwise, Dad was doing fine–seeing you again might just make him sick with anger.”
Trevor and Deanna’s faces flushed bright red, but they had no words to argue back.
They could only swallow their humiliation and comply.
Trevor wasn’t feeling any better himself that day.
“Grandpa, I’ll head back first,” he said quietly. “I’ve been reckless. When you’re feeling better, I’ll come back and apologize properly.”
As he left, his eyes swept across the room and landed on Serena, who stood quietly to the side, obedient and composed.
His chest filled with nothing but regret.
Deanna also caught sight of her from the corner of her eye. Biting her lip, she forced out an awkward smile.
“Serena… I’m sorry. I wronged you today.”
She bent at the waist in a full ninety–degree bow.
“I’m sorry.”
But Sebastian had already said it–an apology that came too late was no longer something that could be fixed with a simple “sorry.”
“That’s enough. Just go home already.”
His voice carried a cold edge of impatience.
Serena said nothing. Sebastian had already stood up for her. She couldn’t very well contradict her own husband.
She wasn’t some saint.
If she forgave someone the first time they looked down on her, there would be a second time. A third. And
then countless more.

Bryce lifted his hand and knocked him lightly on the head, pointing at him with helpless frustration
“You fool! You couldn’t even raise your own son properly, yet you thought you could adopt a daughter? If you keep being this muddleheaded, this family will never know peace!”
Nathan finally came to his senses.
“Dad. I understand now. This time… I won’t go soft.”
So what if he had raised her for more than twenty years?
When it was time to be ruthless, he would have to be ruthless.
Amber figured the timing was about right. As the sky slowly brightened, she thought it was finally safe to
head back.
But she smelled terrible, and she was filthy from head to toe.
To make the kidnapping look real, Amber had even slashed several cuts into her own arm so she would appear more pitiful.
She pulled the three hundred she had prepared in advance from her pocket and waved down a cab.
The driver looked at her with obvious disdain.
“Miss, you smell pretty strong.”
Amber forced herself to endure it.
“Sorry. I just ran into kidnappers. Could you drive faster and take me home?”
“Kidnappers? Seriously?” The driver raised his eyebrows. “And they just let you go like that?”
Amber’s temper flared.
“Sir, I escaped myself. Is that not possible?”
“Oh, sure. Totally possible!” the driver said with a snort. “But honestly, I think you should go to the hospital first. Maybe see the psychiatric department.”
Amber swallowed her anger and endured the ride until they finally arrived at the gates of the Levine Residence.
The fare came to three hundred and one.
Amber was one dollar short.
