Blake hadn’t expected him to come out swinging like that. “Heh, Mr. Hill, I think you’ve got the wrong idea.”

“I don’t. When Lucinda was giving birth, I don’t know if you showed up on purpose, but I want you to st away from her.”

Blake’s expression hardened. “And what gives you the right to tell me that?”

“Because I’m her husband. I’m our daughter’s father. And you? You’re just the guy she once had feelings that never went anywhere.”

Blake’s pupils tightened sharply. This man clearly knew more than he should. “I didn’t show up on purpose. A friend of mine was hospitalized. I just happened to pass by.”

“What kind of coincidence is that? Don’t tell me your friend is some elementary school classmate you haven’t seen in over a decade who just happened to be pregnant, and you flew all the way back just to check in?” Julian let out a cold scoff. “Mr. Murphy, you can lie to yourself all you want, but don’t insult me with something that weak.”

Blake had forgotten. The man in front of him was the hospital’s director. Of course, Julian had access to patient records.

“Fine. I’ll admit it. I did want to see her. But I didn’t plan on letting her see me,” he explained.

Even he couldn’t always explain his own actions. He just wanted to catch a glimpse of her from a distance. That was all. But if he ever found out she wasn’t being treated right, he knew he might not be able to stay

out of it.

Julian looked at him with open disdain, unimpressed by the contradiction in his words.

See? He’s slipping. And he still claims he’s not here to interfere with us!

“Lucinda doesn’t want to see you. You turned her down before, so what is this now? Trying to act devoted?” Julian said.

Blake curled his lips into a faint, amused smile. “Is that what she told you?”

Julian’s hand tightened into a fist. “She doesn’t want to see you.” He repeated it, this time sounding more like a warning. Maybe even something he needed to convince himself of.

Blake chuckled. “Relax. I’m not going to seek her out. No need to get so jumpy. Or what, after all this time, you still can’t make her fall for you?”

The words hit exactly where it hurt most. It was the one thing Julian could never get past, and Blake had just twisted it deeper.

“She will love me.” With that, Julian turned and walked away.

He had been sitting in the car, watching the streets drift past, when he suddenly thought of her that day The way she had cried her eyes out. So small, curled in on herself.

All of this happiness felt stolen. That was why he couldn’t stop being afraid.

When Julian got home, Lucinda was already complaining, “Julian, Berry peed. Why did you take so long?”

He looked at her, lips pushed out in a pout, and something in him softened. “I’m here. Sorry. Had a dinner thing tonight.”

She leaned in and sniffed him. “Fine. No perfume. Julian, if I ever catch you cheating, you’re dead.”

He let out a helpless laugh. “My girl, I’d sooner be in a coffin than cheat.

“Julian, what kind of nonsense are you talking about?” she shot back, hands on her hips.

She fell quiet.

I’ve never seen anyone curse himself like that.

“Alright, alright. My bad. Knock on wood. Happy now?”

Still, Lucinda felt he seemed in a better mood today.

Lucinda blinked. “He’s busy in the study. Were you looking for him?”

“Sigh, why would I be looking for him? I came to see you today.” Once Deanna confirmed Julian wouldn’t be coming out, Deanna cut straight to the point. “Lucinda, I heard your grandpa transferred ten percent o the company to you last week?”

Lucinda peeled a lychee slowly and popped it into her mouth. “Yeah. Deanna, want some lychee?”

Deanna gave a tight–lipped smile. “I don’t eat, you eat.” But she clenched her palm a little tighter. “Lucinda. your grandpa really spoils you, huh?”

Lucinda pursed her lips in a smile. “Yeah. My grandpa said this was meant for my dad. After he passed, it could only go to me. And I’ve got a little money myself, so nobody in my husband’s family can push me around, right, Deanna?”

Deanna’s expression darkened. Being called out by a younger family member was a little hard to swallow. “Yeah,” she said, trying to steer the conversation back. “But Trevor still doesn’t have any shares either, right?”
