“Oh.” Lucinda responded in a perfunctory tone.

After dinner, Julian said he would send her home. She refused right away, saying she had driven herself.

Julian watched the red sports car disappear into the distance. Only then did he remember hadn’t told the driver he was done eating.

Lucinda watched Julian go into the study to see her grandfather. He came out not long after
