Kirby’s POV
I forced down the bitterness rising in my chest, sat up straight, and spoke in the calmest voice I could muster. "Morning, Leslie..."
She frowned and turned her gaze to Liam, her eyes silently demanding to know why he had allowed me inside. Before Liam could answer, I stood up with the thermal container and beat him to it. "I’m here on business."
I left it at that and strode into her office without waiting for an invitation. She hesitated for a beat but eventually followed me in, handing her materials to Liam as she gave her orders. "Two coffees."
I sat on the sofa and watched her. Every inch of this office bore her mark—it was powerful, confident, and belonged to its true master.
"Sit..." my voice was low.
She ignored the invitation and walked straight to her desk, sitting down and opening her laptop. The light from the screen illuminated her perfect profile. With a slow curve of her lips, she spoke. "Alpha Kirby, what kind of business is so urgent that it requires your personal attendance?"
I looked up, and the frustration I had been bottling up all night finally found its vent. "I could have said this over the phone," I said, the words practically ground out through my teeth, "but you blocked me!"
She arched an eyebrow, her tone as light as if she were commenting on the weather. "Did I?"
Her feigned ignorance was as infuriating as it was helpless. She picked up her phone with a casual air, scanning the screen. "I thought some random person was sending harassment messages. I didn't bother checking the name before I blocked it."
It was a blatant jab at the shamelessness of my text. My gaze darkened as I rose and walked over to her, bracing my hands on the back of her chair and pinning her within the radius of my presence. As I leaned down, I caught the scent of pine that always haunted my thoughts—cold and intoxicating.
I lowered my voice, emphasizing every word. "Leslie, you did that on purpose!"
Silence stretched between us for a second.
I saw her lowered lashes tremble slightly before she looked up at me with a shallow, provocative smile. "Yes. I did."
Now that she had torn away the pretense, I found myself at a loss for words. She pushed against the desk, sending her chair sliding backward to put distance between us.
