The matriarch shot a withering glare at Caspian. "If he can throw an entire banquet just to lobby for his grandson, why can't I do the same? Go! And tell your wife to start rallying votes for Julian while you're at it."
...
Caelan looked thoroughly humiliated, but he couldn't exactly defy his own mother. Clutching the red rose, he waded into the crowd.
Cyril threw one last glance over the bustling room and turned to leave. Dorian Ravenshire set down his glass and looked his way.
"Cyril, where are you going?"
"Just stepping out for a moment," Cyril replied.
Dorian nodded.
Without a trace of hesitation, Cyril exited the banquet hall.
Only when his silhouette completely vanished did Preston slowly tear his gaze away. Ever since Cyril had managed a fluke victory against him in their last encounter, Preston had gradually begun keeping an eye on the Ravenshire family's illegitimate son.
Graham Everhart's expression remained entirely impassive. "Cyril will never amount to anything of true substance. Preston, your real rival is over there."
Preston smiled, his gaze instantly locking onto Alaric. "It looks like tonight's 'princess' has already been crowned."
"This is a Ravenshire banquet," his grandfather noted. "Any other outcome would be downright bizarre."
Everyone seated in this hall was a prominent figure in Stormhollow. Aside from a few naive kids, the vast majority of guests had carefully weighed the political and social ramifications before giving away their flowers.
After a moment of thought, Graham pointed toward the lively dance floor. "Go mingle a bit. You might not change the outcome, but you can't walk out of here without a single flower."
Preston stood up. "Yes, Grandpa."

Outside the hall.
Cyril had been standing under the veranda for quite some time, the raucous noise from inside completely severed from his isolated world. The night breeze brushed against his face, carrying a faint, intoxicating chill. He looked down, staring blankly at a small flower by his feet, entirely lost in thought.
"Um, Cyril?"
A soft voice suddenly pulled him back to reality.
Cyril turned his head. Upon recognizing the person standing before him, the faint light in his eyes instantly dimmed.
