The heavy smack stunned Lara into silence. Evelyn had always catered to her every whim, never raising her voice, let alone a hand.
Evelyn pulled Lara into a frantic hug. "Dad, it's my fault for failing to raise her right. I'll discipline her properly when we get home. I swear this will never happen again."
Caspian Ravenshire sighed softly. "Lara, do you truly know what the privilege of the elite is?"
Lara trembled, staring back at him with defiant eyes.
"If the only thing you do with the power of the Ravenshire family is crush the weak, then you aren't fit to wield it," Caspian said, his voice cold. "Today, I am revoking that privilege."
Evelyn froze, staring at him in disbelief. "Dad? What do you mean?"
"The Ravenshire family hasn't stood tall in Athelvia for a century because of one person. It survives because of every generation," Caspian replied. "A family doesn't prosper off a single individual, but it can absolutely be ruined by one. It's a gamble the Ravenshire family cannot afford to make."
Evelyn's heart plummeted. Years ago, the elder had used those exact words when he exiled Jaxen Ravenshire from the country.
"Lara has grown up, and so has her ego," Caspian continued. "The Obsidian Estate is far too small for her grand ambitions now. She is no longer welcome here."
"Dad!" Evelyn collapsed to the floor, clinging desperately to Caspian's legs. "I know I was wrong! I'll keep her in line. She will never do anything to shame the family again!"
Hearing that her grandfather was severing ties, Lara finally grasped the gravity of the situation. Her father was still banking on Caspian to arrange a marriage with the Everhart family. If they broke ties with the Ravenshires, Preston Everhart would never look her way.
"Grandpa, I'm sorry! Grandpa, please!"
But Caspian was out of patience. He waved a dismissive hand. "Cedric, see them out."
See them out?
