"Ahhh!"
The tidal wave of screaming threatened to blow the roof off both buildings.
Vivienne and Bianca, who had been happily chatting about their summer break, were jolted by the deafening noise. Exchanging a single, knowing look, they silently pulled out their noise-canceling headphones and slipped them on.
With a reaction this explosive, there was only one explanation: Cyril, the ultimate social butterfly, had returned.
The Elite and Talent & Virtue classes were fiercely divided, two warring factions separated by an uncrossable chasm. Only a master manipulator like Cyril could make the scholarship kids temporarily forget their deep-seated class resentment.
"It's Cyril! Why is he back early?"
The girls in the classroom practically vibrated with excitement. Losing their battle with restraint, they bolted for the door. The boys, long accustomed to this routine, didn't even bat an eye.
Mina, however, was clearly distracted. She threw several glances out the window while pretending not to care.
Catching on, Sophia gently patted her shoulder. "Aren't you going to look?"
"Why would I care? Since he's back, I can see him whenever I want," Mina replied, casually fluffing her hair in a display of faux indifference.
Sophia chuckled. "Playing hard to get now, are we? I wonder who locked herself in her room and cried for three straight days when she found out he'd be gone for the semester."
Rarely bested, Mina flushed and glared at her. "Sophia, one more word and our friendship is over."
Sophia raised her hands in surrender. "Okay, okay, I'm just teasing. But do you know why he came back early?"
Sophia looked genuinely surprised. "I saw it. Are you serious?"
Mina tried to act cool. "So what if you saw it? Don't tell anyone."
A few days ago, she had checked her calendar and realized her birthday was approaching. Driven by a moment of reckless hope, she had texted him: Cyril, is there any way you could come back for my birthday party?
She waited for hours. He never replied. The disappointment ruined her mood, draining the color from her days and killing any excitement she had for turning sixteen.
But if he hadn't replied, why was he suddenly back?
Unable to resist, she opened their chat again. A spark of wild anticipation flickered in her eyes. Was he really here for her?
