The Merriton Capitol Building.
The heavy doors of the conference room swung open, and waves of high-ranking officials streamed out, forming small groups and whispering amongst themselves in hushed tones.
"Mr. Cyril."
Someone called out without any hesitation. Instantly, the crowd slowed their pace, their eyes naturally gravitating toward the most striking figure in the room.
The young man was impeccably dressed in a tailored suit, radiating an aura of effortless, aristocratic power. With just a single glance over his shoulder, the stark contrast between him and the rest of the politicians was glaringly obvious.
Moira Nash quickly jogged up to him. "Sir, your schedule isn't clear yet. The Council Speaker has requested that you personally handle the minutes for this next session."
Cyril glanced down at his phone, then turned and walked back into the conference room. The moment the heavy doors clicked shut, the expressions of the men in the hallway underwent a subtle, dramatic shift.
Dorian Ravenshire was preparing to transition into Congress. Before taking his new post, he had deliberately summoned the entire Ravenshire faction in Merriton to map out the city's future political landscape.
By all standard protocols, Cyril shouldn't have been allowed anywhere near these meetings. But Dorian had personally appointed him as his propaganda secretary. Not only was the boy sitting in on highly classified briefings, but he was also personally drafting the executive resolutions. The sheer weight of that trust sent a very clear, undeniable message.
"The second son is truly a force to be reckoned with now. It looks like the winds in Merriton are changing."
"That's putting it lightly. Word is, the old patriarch of the Ravenshire family heavily favors him. He's keeping the boy close and mentoring him personally."
"That explains it. Mr. Cyril is approachable, but his insights are razor-sharp. He's a rare talent."
The officials murmured in low voices, showering Cyril with glowing praise.
"He can play dress-up all he wants, but he's still just a bastard! He doesn't belong here!"
A heavy-set man spat a wad of phlegm onto the floor and swaggered into the elevator.
The hallway instantly fell dead silent. The officials exchanged nervous glances, suddenly pretending they had gone deaf and blind.
The man was Vincent Montclair, tied to the Montclair family by marriage. Riding the coattails of his nepotism, he had secured the position of Chief of Police in Merriton. Back when Victoria had real power, everyone gave him a wide berth, terrified of offending him.
