The blindingly bright smile completely caught Alaric off guard. To prevent himself from losing his composure, he executed a tactical half-step backward.
Vivienne's smile faltered for a fraction of a second before roaring back even more radiantly.
"What's wrong? Are you busy? Did I interrupt something?"
"..." Alaric shook his head slowly. "No. Do you need something?"
Wesley watched the paused video conference on the monitors in silence. Those poor board members had devoted their lives to the company, only to be tossed aside. The king was officially losing his mind over a pretty face.
"Mmhmm." Vivienne nodded enthusiastically, pressing her palms together in prayer, her attitude unprecedentedly sweet. "Alaric, there's a huge favor I really need to ask you."
Alaric wasn't entirely sure how to handle this version of her. He turned and started walking back toward the study, making it halfway before he realized what he was doing and managed to pull his expression back into an aloof mask. "Come in."
Still acting so cold and distant? Vivienne felt her smile threatening to crack.
Alaric entered the study first and ruthlessly closed out the video conference without a second of hesitation.
Vivienne hovered near the floor-to-ceiling windows, peering inside. Alaric's face was completely devoid of emotion. His icy, unapproachable aura was rapidly draining away her desire to ask for his help.
She turned to leave, but the thought of Sophia's tragic destiny anchored her feet to the floor. Gritting her teeth, she finally stepped into the study.
One corner of the room opened up directly onto a koi pond, and an elegant mahogany lounger sat right beneath the window. Vivienne unceremoniously plopped herself down onto it, plastering on a smile that was polite but dangerously close to awkward. "Alaric, can I tell you what it is now?"
Alaric raised his eyes to look at her, his gaze losing focus for a brief moment.
For some inexplicable reason, an image suddenly flashed through his mind: sitting by the window, the koi breaking the surface of the lotus pond, surrounded by the boundless warmth of spring.
He quickly lowered his gaze, his slightly flushed fingertips unconsciously tracing the armrests of his chair.
Vivienne feigned innocence. "Alaric, what's wrong? Are you feeling sick? Should I have Dr. Cole come take a look at you?"
Alaric shook his head, his voice painfully calm. "Go ahead. What do you need?"
