[World Narrative Rule Five: Judgement Plays are Inescapable.]
[Current fleeing characters +1: Aurelia Ravenshire, Sophia Everhart, Mina Blackthorne]
[Eradication countdown initiated: 6:00:00]
Mina's death trap had been triggered.
Just now.
Compared to Aurelia's escape window, Mina's time was cut in half. The Narrative Realm's control over escaping characters was tightening.
Vivienne stood in the sea of people, gazing at the sprawling concrete jungle of desire and greed. In that moment, she gained a far more concrete understanding of the terrifying power of the realm's rules.
Time was running out. She couldn't afford to hesitate. Vivienne flagged down a taxi and gave the driver the address of the Blackthorne Residence.
On the way, she called Mina incessantly. When the calls wouldn't connect, she spammed messages. She clung to a sliver of hope that Mina might see at least one of them.
The cab navigated the heavy traffic until her phone battery dipped into the red. That one-in-a-million chance still hadn't happened. Just as Vivienne was about to give up on this method, an unknown number called her.
Without a second thought, she answered.
"Is this Mr. Blackthorne?"
The man on the other end clearly paused. "How did you know it was me?"
With Mina stealing two million dollars, the Blackthornes were bound to investigate. Vivienne hadn't exactly hidden her tracks, so they definitely knew one million of it was sitting in her account right now.
But there was no time to explain all that. Her battery was dying.
Theron looked concerned. "Grandfather, what did the Ravenshire girl say?"
Edmund recalled the absolute certainty in the girl's voice. "She said, 'I'm not some sketchy friend of Mina's.'"
"And you believed her?" Theron asked.
On the phone, his grandfather hadn't questioned her once, prioritizing her questions instead. If that wasn't trust, what was?
"Why would a daughter of the Ravenshire family be short on cash?" Edmund mused. "If she isn't desperate for money, why would she take a million dollars from Mina? And more importantly, what could possibly make Mina willingly steal two million from her own home?"
Edmund stood up. "Any news from the hospital?"
"Not yet," Theron replied. "But our people have taken over. We should have an update soon."
A dark glint flashed in Edmund's eyes. Finding nothing was the biggest clue of all.
"Go get the car ready."
