Vellmont Lodge.
Marissa was applying ointment to Vivienne's hands. After firing guns for hours, the webbing between her thumbs and her forearms was bruised and swollen.
"You need to know your limits and take things slow. You've completely wrecked your hands in one day! How are you going to practice later? All that effort for nothing."
Marissa had no idea what she had actually been doing, assuming she had simply pushed herself too hard at the shooting range. She looked heartbroken.
Vivienne laughed. "Wow, Marissa, since when did you start giving lectures?"
Marissa gave her a mock glare. "I know plenty! It's just like making soup. If you want a rich broth, you don't blast it with high heat right away. You have to let it simmer on low for seven or eight hours to get that deep flavor."
Vivienne nodded solemnly. "I have been enlightened."
Knowing Vivienne wasn't taking her seriously, Marissa didn't push the issue. She stood up. "I'll go get you a bowl of soup."
Vivienne looked at her. "Marissa? Do you ever want to leave?"
Marissa paused, confused. "Leave for where?"
Vivienne thought for a moment. "Anywhere. Go do something you love, see more of the world."
In her memories, Marissa was always bustling around the kitchen. Her entire world seemed confined to Obsidian Estate.
Marissa shook her head.
Now it was Vivienne's turn to be confused. "Why not? If it's about money, I can—"
Marissa smiled gently. "It's not about the money. It's because... I'm already doing what I love."
Vivienne was stunned, unable to process the answer for a second.
Marissa pointed toward the windowsill, where the pink roses in the glass vase were blooming beautifully. "If you're really that bored, Ms. Lexton, go look at the flowers instead of overthinking things."
"..."
Marissa turned and headed back to the kitchen.
Vivienne frowned, shuffling over to the windowsill in her turtle slippers.
The pink roses were stunning. Exactly nine of them.
Why was everyone acting so weird today?
He didn't care about a massive favor from the Blackthornes?
Wesley quickly found another topic. "Ah! Sir, the church in the West District—"
Alaric tapped his finger against the desk.
Unable to hold back, Wesley rolled his eyes and pulled out a large chunk of files. "This is Ms. Lexton's daily routine for the past little while."
Alaric lowered his gaze and casually took the files.
He was playing it so cool!
Wesley saw right through it but kept his mouth shut, continuing his report. "At first glance, it looks totally normal. But if you work backward from the results, her entire routine is incredibly suspicious. Take the Commerce Century Tower incident. Our Shadow Chamber and all public intelligence lines found absolutely nothing. But Ms. Lexton left Obsidian Estate and went straight to the tower, almost as if she knew what was going to happen."
Alaric flipped through the pages one by one, saying nothing.
"Then there's the Everhart girl. Ms. Lexton barely interacts with her, yet the moment she needed help, Ms. Lexton went straight to the Everharts. She even came to beg you for a favor for her sake."
Wesley rubbed his chin, analyzing it piece by piece. "She hates your guts, yet she begs for a stranger. Suspicious! Very suspicious."
