The heating in the room was pleasantly warm. Nourished by the comfortable temperature overnight, the pink rose petals had fully bloomed, exposing their delicate centers and filling the air with a sweet fragrance.
Vivienne Lexton woke to the floral scent, groggily rubbing her eyes. After spacing out for a moment, she instinctively reached for her phone to check the time, only to notice a pop-up message on the screen.
She let out a lazy yawn and tapped it open.
[Cyril Bean: Balthazar Beaufort's files aren't convenient to hand over right now. Wait until I get back from Merriton City.]
Not convenient?
Vivienne was instantly wide awake. She hopped out of bed, slid into her turtle slippers, and dashed into the bathroom. What could possibly be inconvenient?
That manipulative jerk was definitely just making excuses.

The bright winter sun carried over into the next day.
A line of black luxury cars parked across the expansive front courtyard of Obsidian Estate.
Gideon Whitmore was the first to step out. His cold gaze swept over the estate's grand sign before he turned to open the rear door. "Dad."
Frederick Whitmore stepped out, wearing a black padded jacket and rolling two glossy dark walnuts in his palm. A squad of burly men in sharp suits immediately followed.
"Go, knock on the door," Frederick ordered.
Just as the Whitmore family's butler was about to step forward, the heavy bronze gates of Obsidian Estate slowly creaked open from the inside.
Wesley Crain walked out alone, his expression completely unreadable. "Elder Mr. Whitmore, please forgive our lack of a proper welcome. My young master has already prepared hot tea. Right this way."
Frederick slowly rotated the walnuts in his hand, a chilling smile touching his eyes. "Good. The elder Mr. Ravenshire certainly raised a fine grandson. Today, I'll test his mettle on behalf of my old friend."
Wesley bowed his head slightly and stepped aside.
As Frederick crossed the threshold, Gideon moved to follow, signaling the bodyguards to act.
A subordinate immediately handed over the prepared document. Gideon snatched it and slapped it aggressively against Wesley's chest. "Get out of my way!"
Wesley lowered his head and took a single step back.
His face dark with fury, Gideon crossed the threshold. "What are you all standing around for? Get in there and search the place! Tear it apart if you have to!"
Playing deaf to the chaos, Frederick offered a thin smile to Wesley. "Now, are you going to take me to see your young master?"
Wesley nodded. "Elder Mr. Whitmore, please follow me."
Obsidian Estate was divided into a front and back courtyard. The front was meant for guests, while the back served as the private family residence. Typically, only the front was open to outsiders; the back was strictly off-limits to anyone not bearing the Ravenshire name.
This was an unspoken rule known to everyone in Athelvia's upper echelons.
But the police were clearly here to provoke. As soon as they entered the estate, Gideon and his men bypassed the guest areas and marched straight toward the inner residence.
