The fire at The Detention Center was contained to a very small area. Within half an hour, firetrucks, police cruisers, and ambulances had all arrived at the scene.
The blaze lit up the dreary winter sky.
Cyril stood on the observation tower, his eyes locked onto the flames. The thick black smoke billowed upward like blooming mushroom clouds. The chaotic screams for help, the organized shouts of the rescue teams—it all felt incredibly familiar, yet entirely detached.
...
"Mom! Mom!"
Ignoring the people trying to hold him back, Cyril charged straight into the inferno. The thick smoke made it nearly impossible to see. He frantically searched through the burning wreckage, screaming at the top of his lungs, "Mom! Mom!"
Finally, he spotted a familiar figure huddled in the corner of the living room.
"Mom! Don't be afraid, I'm going to get you out."
Summer Hollis's face was streaked with black soot. Her expression was completely hollow. She shoved his hands away, staring at him like he was a total stranger as she demanded, "Who are you?"
Cyril dropped to his knees and pulled up the cleanest corner of his shirt. "It's me, your Cyril."
Summer shook her head. Tears spilled from her eyes, mixing with the dark ash and staining her face.
She looked at him and seriously corrected him. "You're not Cyril. My Cyril is dead."
Cyril's fingers froze. He gently wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes, his voice impossibly soft. "I am Cyril. I will always be your Cyril."
Summer suddenly broke down sobbing, violently shoving him away. "No, you're not! You're not!"
She cried with a heart-wrenching agony, pulling a tiny, shattered fragment of bone from her pocket. "They told me my Cyril was strangled to death! They crushed his bones and threw him into the steel furnace until there wasn't even any ash left! Ahhhhh!!!"
Cyril shook his head, lunging forward to pull Summer into his arms. "No, they were lying to you! Let's just get out of here first, okay?"
Summer shook her head, completely delirious. "I can't leave. I can't leave."
The fire was growing wilder. If they stayed any longer, they would both burn alive. Without a second thought, Cyril hoisted Summer onto his back.
Finally, there was movement outside. A resonant pounding echoed back against the metal.
"Is someone in there?!"
In that instant, an incredibly bright light erupted in Cyril's eyes. "Yes! Open the door! We're in here!"
"Is that you, Master Cyril?"
Cyril glanced back at Summer before using every ounce of strength he had to scream back, "Yes! Get us out of here!"
"Master Cyril, is that woman with you?"
Cyril froze. The expression of relief vanished from his face, replaced by a rigid stiffness.
"Mrs. Montclair told me to pass on a message. The game is over. As long as you personally send that bitch to hell, you will finally be free."
