Having no other choice, she obediently stepped out of the car.
Edmund waved her over, and after a moment's hesitation, Isolde stepped forward to support his arm.
Together, they walked through the mud and arrived at the entrance of a dark alleyway.
"Isolde, what do you think of this place?"
Isolde looked around. She didn't know what to say. This was where she had grown up; every tragedy in her life had unfolded here.
"I've bought this land. Not just here, but over there, and there too." Edmund pointed at the sprawling stretch of crumbling concrete houses in the distance. "Now, it all belongs to you."
Isolde froze. She was usually exceptional at hiding her emotions, but the shock hit her so fast she couldn't conceal it.
Edmund pointed toward the depths of the alleyway, his tone perfectly calm. "I owe you a debt I can never repay in this lifetime. Consider this small gift my compensation to you.
"The foundation is still the same, but this time, you can tear everything down and rebuild it. You can build schools, hospitals, amusement parks, or gardens. Whatever makes you happy."
Isolde was smart. She instantly grasped the deeper meaning behind his words. She felt a lump in her throat. "Really?"
"Really." Edmund nodded. "Let me show you a magic trick."
He pointed at the concrete houses at the end of the alley and flicked his finger.
Boom!
A deafening explosion shattered the sky.
Rows of concrete buildings collapsed in a spectacular chain reaction, sending massive plumes of dust into the air.
Isolde stiffened, looking up at him. "Do you know what I did? You really don't blame me?"
Edmund shook his head. "None of that matters. What matters is the result. You and Mina both came home."
"People shouldn't be too greedy. We can't demand that you simply survive while also demanding that you live perfectly by our moral standards. In times of war and starvation, people have turned on their own flesh and blood. When disaster strikes, even loving couples can become bitter enemies. It's simply human nature."
"Let the past be the past. We won't hold anything against you. From today on, your life won't just be about being abandoned or traded. You will have the power to make your own choices."
"Just like this leveled wasteland before you. You can build anything you want."
Isolde choked back a sob, tears streaming down her face.
Edmund patted her head gently. "Don't cry. Since you're finally home, it's time to say a proper goodbye to the past."
