"Oh, is Cyril throwing a tantrum because he lost a game of chess?"
Cyril froze. He looked up to see Vivienne pulling Aurelia by the hand, already talking trash. "See? A person's character reflects in how they play games. I told you he had a terrible temper."
Aurelia smiled awkwardly. "Cyril."
Last night, everyone had eaten and celebrated until late. Not wanting to disturb the others, Theron had taken Mina back to the hotel to rest, while Aurelia and Vivienne shared a room.
Cyril smiled and nodded. "Did you sleep well last night?"
"I slept so well that I only just woke up." Aurelia looked a bit embarrassed as she glanced around. "Where is Alaric?"
Cyril bent down to gather the chess pieces. "He stepped out. There's breakfast in the kitchen."
Aurelia stared at the pieces in his hand, hesitating for a moment before looking at him with anticipation. "Cyril, could I play a game with you?"
She actually had a deep understanding of chess strategy. Everyone always said Cyril was incredible, and she had always wanted a chance to spar with him. In the past, she always felt like she wasn't good enough, so she never dared to ask.
Cyril gave her a glance and readily agreed. "Of course."
Aurelia's face lit up with excitement. She knelt down by the chessboard, eager to begin.
Vivienne ran into the kitchen, grabbed a piece of corn, snapped it in half, and handed it over. "Here, eat while you play."
"Thanks." Aurelia took the corn, her eyes shining as she looked at Cyril. "Cyril, please don't go easy on me."
Cyril hesitated slightly. "Are you sure?"
"Yes." Aurelia was brimming with confidence. "I want to test my real skill level."
Three minutes later.
"..."
The board was a dead end. Almost all her pieces were still intact, but her King was completely trapped.
Aurelia silently took her first bite of the corn, feeling a bit unwilling to accept defeat. "Can we play one more time?"
Cyril nodded.
This time lasted a little longer, but she only managed to hold on for five minutes, and that was mainly because she took longer to think about her moves.
"..."
Vivienne took the last bite of her corn and patted Aurelia's shoulder like a seasoned veteran. "Do you want to beat him? I have a way."
Aurelia chimed in to support her. "I think it sounds really fun."
"Who goes first?" Cyril asked.
"Me, obviously." Without waiting for him to respond, Vivienne made the first move, flipping a piece in the middle.
Lucky her. It was a red Cannon.
"Ah!" Aurelia looked thrilled.
Cyril hadn't expected her to have such good luck either. He picked a corner and flipped a red Bishop.
"Heh~" Vivienne picked up her red Cannon and blindly attacked another piece across the board.
Aurelia quickly grabbed her arm. "You're just going to attack? What if it's an allied piece?"
Vivienne waved her off. "If there's a rule for the Cannon, it means it's a crucial factor for winning the game. Luck can be good or bad, but since this game is a gamble on luck, we'll just bet it all on luck." With that, she flipped over the piece she had taken. A black King rested in the palm of her hand.
Aurelia looked shocked, and even Cyril was slightly taken aback.
"See? We have great luck." Vivienne smiled. "Your turn."
