Chaos Girl Rewrites the Script novel Chapter 625

A night of deep sleep.

Alaric was woken up by his phone ringing.

"Boss, it's... it's bad! Someone broke into the hotel last night... and... and they killed him!" Wesley's hangover hadn't fully cleared yet, and he spoke in a stammer.

Alaric paused, a dark glint flashing in his eyes. He pressed a hand against his forehead, his tone cold. "Besides me, who else did you contact yesterday?"

Wesley panicked. "Boss, you don't suspect me, do you? Lennox and I drank ourselves under the table last night... Wait, Lennox?"

The man on the other end of the line paused. "Lennox called me yesterday during the day, but I didn't tell him anything."

"This is Merriton City," Alaric said. "You think just because you didn't say anything, they couldn't find out?"

Wesley instantly understood, gnashing his teeth in fury. "That son of a bitch, Lennox! He used his honest-looking face to set me up! No wonder he kept pushing drinks on me yesterday. This was clearly premeditated."

Alaric rolled out of bed. "What's the situation at the hotel?"

"Our men noticed it in time. They silenced him, but we still have the body."

Ten minutes later, Alaric emerged from his bedroom fully dressed. As he passed the living room, his footsteps faltered.

Cyril, wearing a black shirt, sat in the living room playing chess. Sensing Alaric's gaze, he looked up without avoiding it and smiled. "Alaric, heading out this early?"

Alaric thought for a moment before stepping into the living room. He first gave Cyril a sweeping glance before letting his eyes fall on the chessboard.

The board was set exactly as it had been during the middle of their game yesterday.

With a single glance, Alaric could tell that Cyril was recreating yesterday's match.

According to yesterday's moves, it was time for the red knight to advance. Just as Cyril's fingers pressed down on the red knight, Alaric leaned forward, moving his cannon first to declare a check.

Cyril looked up, meeting his eyes. "Good move, Alaric."

"The wine last night was good," Alaric said. Turning on his heel, he walked out of the living room.

A moment later, the sound of the front door locking echoed through the apartment.

Completely unfazed, Cyril stared at the chessboard in front of him. "Playing mind games."

Just then, his phone buzzed on the coffee table.

Cyril glanced at it, stood up, and walked out to the balcony.

"Dad."

Dorian's voice was exceptionally grim. "Where is Alaric?"

"He just left," Cyril said. "He probably already received the news."

"I didn't expect Alaric to actually have the capability to trace things this far. He really shouldn't be underestimated. It's a good thing you were vigilant, otherwise, it would have been a massive disaster if he had found anything."

Cyril watched the boats coming and going at the port, his gaze icy. "Alaric specifically came over to test me just now. I'm worried he already suspects me."

"So what if he suspects you? The old man demands evidence. You don't have to worry. I've cleaned everything up. Even if he keeps digging, the dead can't testify."

In reality, Alaric never intended to pry the mercenary's mouth open. His plan from the beginning was to draw the snake out of its hole. He didn't have evidence initially, but now, Dorian's eagerness to silence the witness had handed him a solid lead.

Wesley turned to leave, but suddenly remembered something and gave Alaric a thumbs up. "Boss, you're a badass!"

Sure enough, his boss might be terrible at romance, but he was absolutely top-tier at everything else.

Alaric's expression remained neutral, but for some reason, the chess match from when he left the apartment suddenly flashed through his mind.

"Cyril, you did well. I was worried you wouldn't be able to handle those old loyalists when I left you in Merriton City alone, but it seems I worried for nothing."

Cyril smiled. "Grandpa taught me well."

Dorian remained silent for a moment before speaking again. "Once Marvin Pope secures his position, return to Stormhollow to prepare for your exams. The military academy offers bonus military credits for the top student every year. Merriton City is too small to sharpen your skills."

"Understood."

Cyril hung up the phone and turned to look at the scattered chess pieces on the coffee table.

When he first entered the Obsidian Estate, Dorian had warned him that he was nothing but a pawn. He was told not to harbor any delusions of comparing himself to anyone else. Even if he possessed the intellect of a hundred dragons, he still had to bow his head in front of Alaric, because no one in the Ravenshire family wanted to see a bastard outshine the legitimate heir. But now, Dorian was gradually forgetting his original intentions.

Cyril lowered his eyelids, sweeping a large hand across the board and knocking the pieces into a messy pile.

They still didn't seem to understand who the real pawn was.
