Vivienne couldn't help but laugh. "What is this?"
"Birthday cash," Mina said. "I sold off all the expensive stuff my family bought me over the years. The money's all right here."
"You're giving it all to me? What about you?"
"Me?" Mina stared at the last empty seat for a moment before dropping into it. "I'm going to ride your coattails. When I run out of cash, I'll just ask you for more."
"..." Vivienne raised an eyebrow. Mina's calculation was so transparent it was almost blinding.
Aurelia and Bianca exchanged a look. Aurelia was the first to stand up. "Oh? Who is that playing chess with Grandpa? Let's go see."
Bianca quickly followed her lead and stood up as well.
The forced smile in Mina's eyes faded slightly as she watched Aurelia and Bianca walk away. "They're surprisingly thoughtful," she murmured.
She tilted her head back, slapped her cheeks lightly, and then turned to Vivienne. "Rowena is dead," she announced abruptly.
Vivienne froze.
Mina immediately realized her slip-up, her expression tightening. "Sorry. It's your birthday. I shouldn't be bringing up something so morbid. I..."
"Are you sad?" Vivienne's gaze was extraordinarily calm.
Mina thought about it. "No, I'm not sad. I just... I feel a little suffocated."
Rowena had believed that if she confessed everything, Mina would figure out a way to save her. Instead, she had been dragged into a very public trial. Rowena had committed countless atrocities. Even if the Blackthorne family hadn't intervened, she would have spent the rest of her life in prison.
But someone was terrified that Rowena's testimony would implicate them. They had bribed the guards at The Detention Center and had her poisoned.
The Blackthorne family could have protected her, but using her life as bait to lure out the true mastermind was a much better strategic move. So, whether as a discarded pawn for the Whitmore family or as bait for the Blackthorne family, Rowena was destined to die.
She spoke slowly. "Rowena's death kind of gave me a sense of purpose. Judge Gresham is getting old, but the people of Athelvia can't afford to lose their champion for justice. So, I want to become the next Honoria Gresham."
After the trial, Vivienne's fiercely independent, heroic self-defense had made her an icon among the women of Athelvia. Fuelled by mainstream media, every young girl in the nation wanted to be the next Vivienne Lexton. But Mina didn't.
She only wanted to be the next Honoria Gresham.
Judge Gresham was famously incorruptible and practically refused to engage with the elite. To protect the integrity of the law, she had isolated herself from family and friends entirely. Yet, she had made an exception for Vivienne. Mina hoped Vivienne could pull some strings and arrange an introduction so she could study under the legendary pioneer.
Her playful demeanor fading, Vivienne solemnly accepted the bank card from Mina.
"Alright," Vivienne said softly. "I think Judge Gresham will be thrilled to meet you."
A superhero was undoubtedly a beacon of hope, but when true justice was upheld and the law remained steadfast, A hero's sword and a water-bearer's pole are one and the same.
